Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Sison.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey with Magellan Tutoring began 13 years ago in the most unexpected way. I was working as a civil engineer and looking to earn some extra income on the side, so I applied to be a private tutor for two different tutoring companies. To my surprise, both hired me. Despite having no formal teaching background, I had a strong foundation in math and test preparation, and within six months, I was juggling my full-time engineering job while tutoring over 20 students.
During those six months, I noticed something interesting: both companies followed a remarkably similar business model. They recruited tutors with strong technical backgrounds, hired them as independent contractors, and marketed their services directly to parents. The model was elegant in its simplicity, and I started thinking—why couldn’t I do this myself?
That’s when Magellan Tutoring was born. I teamed up with two friends, and we divided responsibilities based on our strengths. One partner took charge of building our online presence, website, and technical infrastructure, while the rest of us focused on connecting with families and recruiting quality tutors. We were fortunate to bring on several exceptional tutors early on, and their success with students helped our reputation spread organically through word-of-mouth.
Then came 2020. COVID changed everything—for the world, and for Magellan Tutoring. My two partners decided to move on to other ventures, leaving me as the sole proprietor. Ironically, that challenging year became our breakthrough moment. As schools shifted to remote learning and parents scrambled to support their children’s education, demand for private tutoring exploded. Families throughout the Arlington area were searching for reliable, personalized academic support, and we were positioned to help. I doubled down on growing the business, and our name became synonymous with quality tutoring in Northern Virginia.
A couple of years later, I brought on my friend Hazel to help manage operations, and shortly after that, Vanessa joined our team. Together, the three of us transformed Magellan Tutoring from a side hustle into a thriving educational service. More recently, we’ve added a fourth team member dedicated to strengthening our online marketing presence.
Today, when parents in Arlington search for tutoring services on Google, Magellan Tutoring appears at the top of the results. Our perfect Google star ratings and strong community reputation have made us a household name among Northern Virginia families. What started as a part-time experiment has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of—a business that genuinely makes a difference in students’ lives while supporting a talented team of over 100 tutors. It’s been an amazing journey, and I’m excited about where we’re heading next.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—building a business rarely is. One of our biggest challenges, especially during our rapid growth phase, was keeping up with demand. There were periods when we simply didn’t have enough qualified tutors to serve all the families reaching out to us. Having to turn families away was incredibly frustrating because we knew they were counting on us, and we pride ourselves on being there when students need support.
The tutor shortage was particularly acute during peak seasons—right before standardized tests or at the start of each school year when parents were looking for academic support. We’d receive inquiries faster than we could recruit and vet qualified tutors, which created a real bottleneck in our ability to grow.
Fortunately, we found creative solutions. We began partnering with local agencies and educational organizations to expand our recruitment pipeline. We also benefited from shifts in the job market—more talented professionals were looking for flexible work opportunities, which opened up our candidate pool significantly. We refined our hiring process, conducted countless interviews, and were selective about who we brought onto our team.
Today, I’m proud to say we’ve turned that struggle into one of our greatest strengths. We now have over 100 active tutors on our roster—each one carefully vetted and trained to deliver the personalized, high-quality instruction that Magellan Tutoring is known for. That depth of talent means we can now match students with the perfect tutor for their learning style and academic needs, and we rarely have to turn families away anymore.
Looking back, that challenge taught us valuable lessons about scalability, strategic partnerships, and the importance of building systems that can grow with demand. It wasn’t easy, but overcoming those obstacles made us a stronger, more resilient organization.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Magellan Tutoring?
Magellan Tutoring is a premier private K-12 tutoring company that’s been serving Northern Virginia families for over 13 years. We specialize in personalized one-on-one tutoring across all subjects and grade levels, with a particular strength in SAT preparation, math, reading, and writing.
What sets us apart is our genuine commitment to student success through truly individualized instruction. While many tutoring companies take a one-size-fits-all approach, we match each student with a tutor who fits their specific learning style, personality, and academic needs. With over 100 active tutors on our team, we have the depth and diversity to find the perfect fit for every student.
We’re also known for our innovative integration of technology with personalized teaching. Our proprietary SAT platform features an authentic Digital SAT interface with over 5,000 practice questions and 20 full-length adaptive tests—giving students realistic preparation for the actual exam. We use Teachworks for seamless scheduling and communication, and we partner with leading educational platforms like IXL to provide comprehensive diagnostic assessments and track measurable progress.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise is the trust we’ve built in the Northern Virginia community. When you search for tutoring in Arlington or Alexandria, Magellan Tutoring appears first on Google with perfect star ratings—not because we paid for that position, but because families genuinely believe in what we do. We’ve been featured on local media outlets like WUSA9 News as experts in student digital wellbeing and modern educational challenges, which speaks to our thought leadership in the field.
Beyond academics, we focus on the whole student. We help build confidence, reduce test anxiety, and teach study habits that last a lifetime. Our approach emphasizes progress over grades, interactive learning, and strong tutor-student relationships that make learning engaging rather than stressful.
We want readers to know that Magellan Tutoring isn’t just about raising test scores—though we do average 100-point SAT improvements. It’s about reigniting a student’s love of learning, helping them discover their strengths, and giving them the tools to succeed independently. We offer flexible in-person and virtual sessions throughout Northern Virginia, comprehensive assessments, personalized study plans, and a rewards program for our families.
Most importantly, we’re a locally-owned business run by people who genuinely care. My team—Vanessa, Hazel, and I—are deeply invested in every student’s success, and we’ve built a culture where tutors aren’t just contractors; they’re valued professionals who share our passion for education. That commitment shows in everything we do.
What were you like growing up?
Academically, I was solid, but I wouldn’t say I was naturally gifted. I had to work for my grades, especially in math and science. That work ethic became even more important when I got to college and the material got significantly harder.
One experience that profoundly shaped me happened during my college years when I was taking Calculus 2—a class notorious for breaking students. Most people failed it their first attempt, and I was intimidated going in. Fortunately, my university had a program that assigned tutors to minority students, and I was paired with someone who completely changed my perspective on learning.
Before that, I’d never worked with a tutor. Honestly, at one point during our sessions, I remember thinking, “This feels like cheating—that’s how effective this is.” My tutor had this incredible ability to break down complex material into manageable pieces, to anticipate where I’d get stuck, and to explain concepts in ways that just clicked. It wasn’t about memorizing formulas; it was about truly understanding the underlying principles.
Thanks to that tutoring, I didn’t just pass Calculus 2—I got an A. More importantly, that experience showed me the transformative power of personalized, one-on-one instruction. It planted a seed that would eventually grow into Magellan Tutoring years later.
Looking back, I think my personality was shaped by those formative experiences—the struggle, the persistence, and ultimately the breakthrough that came from having the right support. I learned that intelligence isn’t fixed; with the right guidance and effort, anyone can master challenging material. That belief is at the core of everything we do at Magellan Tutoring today. I want every student we work with to have that same “aha” moment I had in Calculus 2—that realization that they’re capable of far more than they thought possible.
