Community Highlights: Meet Kimberlee Debreaux of Kustomz By Kim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberlee Debreaux.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Kustomz by Kim was created way before I even thought of making it a business. My whole life, I have always been creative, sporty, competitive, curious, passionate and a DIY type of person. I give all the credits of the makings of me to my family. I am the youngest child of three and the only girl. My family has been my biggest support system from the beginning. In my younger years, I remember my whole family living with my paternal grandmother and my two aunts. I can honestly say that this is where a lot of my learning and creativeness started. I remember baking in the kitchen with my eldest aunt. I watched and learned from my grandmother how to sew. I watched my youngest aunt create gift baskets for different occasions. I also watched as my mom and dad taught my brothers how to play basketball. I remember wanting a go cart so bad that I made a push cart out of my grandfather’s hand cart and my razor scooter. When I got a little older, I started to get into sports. I played basketball at first and then found a love for volleyball. Being in sports not only brought out the competitive part of me but also a passion, a different type of love and a lifetime of bonds with people. I started playing basketball around middle school and continued through college. It’s because of basketball that I received a full scholarship to Northeastern University and I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. After finishing college and no longer playing basketball, I felt like something was off. I didn’t know what it was at the time but I knew it didn’t feel right.

I got engaged in 2015 and like most soon to be brides, I got right to the research and looking at what I wanted for my wedding. Soon after I started the research, I realized that I wanted to plan and decorate my own wedding. Planning and decorating my wedding revived that creative, passion and DIY part of me that went missing after college. With some big help from my family, I was able to plan and decorate my wedding. And this is when Kustomz by Kim the business started.

Planning and decorating gives me a thrill and excitement that basketball use to give me. I plan and decorate each event as if it was my own. My business has blossomed into areas I never imagined venturing into. Making cakes and treats was never in my original business plan but it has become a big part of it and I am thankful for it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am in year 5 of my business and I feel like I have just gotten started. Being in the event planning, decorating and treat-making business is very tough because there is a lot of great talent out there. My biggest obstacle was my self-doubt. Sometimes it got really discouraging seeing others in the same field doing something similar to what I was doing but they seemed to receive more support or exposure. I had to stop comparing myself and business to others. My own self-doubt kept me from becoming what I knew I could be. Through a lot of talks with God, family and friends that self-doubt has trickled away. You can never fully focus on yourself/business if you are constantly looking and comparing yourself to others.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Kustomz by Kim is a small family-operated business. Our goal is to be a “One Stop Shop For All Things Events”. We specialize in event decorating, balloon decorating, candy buffets, photo booth rentals, (k)ustom cakes, online treat shops and keepsakes. Over the last year, we have become most popular for our buttercream cakes and stuffed strawberries. I am most proud of my family, friends, returning customers and the support I receive from them on a constant basis. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to do any of this. I want my readers to know that Kustomz by Kim is very grateful and honored every time a booking is made, an order is placed or our name is mentioned in a conversation. We look forward to expanding our business and brand in the future.

What do you think about happiness?
Seeing other people happy makes me happy. It may sound cliche but it really does. If I can make you happy whether you are a family member, friend or customer it just does something to me. It makes me feel like I’m doing something right.

I loved learning more about this business! I’ve hired KBK for my business launch and several other special occasions. Her work ethic is impeccable; and she can execute anything you can conceptualize! My 3-tier Glam Cake for my Launch was the talk of the event! AND all 3 flavors were delicious! Proud of this young woman and her excellence!
