Community Highlights: Meet Khaleeq Ahmad of Helmand Kabobi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khaleeq Ahmad.

Hi Khaleeq, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For years, I navigated the world of telecommunications, but the confines of an office job eventually left me yearning for something more—the independence of my own business. My wife’s family, steeped in the restaurant industry, offered a natural path. We eventually franchised one of their establishments, setting foot into the vibrant world of hospitality.

Then, 2024 brought a profound shift. With the passing of my uncle, Qayum Karzai, a towering figure in Baltimore’s culinary landscape, I found myself standing at a crossroads. Uncle Qayum was the visionary behind the iconic Helmand Restaurant, Helmand Kabobi, and several other beloved eateries across the city. His dedication to Baltimore went far beyond providing exceptional cuisine; he was a steadfast pillar of the community, always ready to help those in need, whether feeding the poor or supporting refugees.

Taking the reins of Helmand Kabobi was more than just a business decision; it was a profound honor and a commitment to continue his remarkable legacy. I am driven to uphold his dedication to quality, his passion for great food, and his unwavering spirit of generosity that so enriched the Baltimore community. Following in his footsteps, I aim to ensure that his impact, both culinary and charitable, endures for generations to come.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a new business is rarely a straightforward path, and my experience has certainly been a mix of challenging hurdles and unexpected smooth sailing. Operating within a city environment, particularly Baltimore, presents a unique set of complexities compared to the more streamlined processes often found in the suburbs of Virginia. Navigating licenses and registrations here can, at times, be tough.

However, I must commend the relevant institutions in Baltimore. Despite the initial challenges, every time I’ve sought assistance, they’ve gone above and beyond to provide support and direct me toward the right solutions. Transitioning from a heavily automated corporate background to handling extensive paperwork was a significant adjustment. Yet, I’m optimistic, as I’m already seeing signs of Baltimore embracing more automation, which is a welcome change.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Helmand Kabobi?
As the owner of Helmand Kabobi, I continue a rich culinary tradition rooted in Baltimore. We are a sister establishment to The Helmand, a restaurant that has been a cornerstone of the city’s dining scene since its opening in 1989. The “Helmand” name has long been celebrated for delivering both exquisite food and impeccable service across Baltimore.

The evolution of our brand led my late uncle to establish Helmand Kabobi in 2014. Responding to a request for a high-end, fast-casual restaurant in the Johns Hopkins vicinity, he extended the same commitment to authentic Afghan cuisine and service excellence that had been the hallmark of The Helmand for decades. Our restaurant now caters to the community from morning till night, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Johns Hopkins community frequently chooses Helmand Kabobi for their events, appreciating the quality of our food and the inviting atmosphere we provide.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My favorite books often explore Afghanistan, the Silk Road, and their rich culinary traditions. Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential especially inspired me to pursue the restaurant business. For podcasts, I’m a big fan of sports and current affairs, which keep me well-informed and entertained.
