Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerri Pine.
Kerri, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always knew I wanted to do my own thing, it just took me a while to finally figure out what that was. Out of college, I went straight into a 100% commission job because I knew I’d put in the time and dedication necessary to be successful but also wanted that flexibility that came along with it. While things went okay that first year, I was in the mortgage industry and the year was 2006 so things didn’t end well.
From there, I did something I swore to my 24-year-old self I’d never do… I got a corporate job…and I ended up staying there for seven years. During this time is when things changed… I learned a lot about running a business, I learned a lot about what NOT to do when running a business and I received corporate level training I could take on to my next chapter.
The corporate job was at an education company which encouraged me to get my M.B.A., something I wouldn’t have done otherwise. For 22 months, I worked on a business plan for a personal shopping service. Although it felt in line with what I’d like to do I felt as though I never quite got it right, my business plan was missing something.
I sat at my desk at work for the next few years, annoyed at how I was being treated at a company that I was making so much money for. I knew I needed to do my own thing, I just didn’t know what. I got pregnant in 2013 and left the corporate job that wasn’t making me happy. I now had time to think about what I was going to do next. I sat and brainstormed… what are things I like to do, what are things I wish I could purchase etc.
From there, I put together all things I loved… fashion, shopping (esp online), sales/marketing, flexibility, etc. The next thing was to figure out what I wanted my brand to be. I thought back to my own shopping experiences and found there was a hole in the market.
I love jewelry, it’s one of the things in your closet that always fits. I hated finding a fun necklace only to wear it twice before it completely fell apart or turned green. I started buying more expensive costume jewelry and found that while they lasted more than two wears, they still didn’t hold up in the long run. I knew there had to be fashion jewelry out there that that didn’t break the bank but could still hold up.
I searched and searched and searched for jewelry that you could wear every day and not worry about it not lasting. I went to trade shows, made connections both online and off and FINALLY found what I was looking for. I now have a SHOWER SWIM GYM line of jewelry that you can literally do anything in! AND it’s AFFORDABLE!
Two years ago, we started shipping internationally and I can’t believe how that has taken off! We are WORLDWIDE now, with Canada, UK, and Australia being our biggest pockets. It’s so fun printing labels seeing items go to India, Singapore, etc.
It’s been a huge thing for my business, I’m proud of my products and they hold up! Last year I launched our wholesale line and we are now in stores across the U.S.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a road full of humps, bumps and straightaways! It’s definitely been a rollercoaster of emotions. One day you hit a sales milestone and you are on top of the world, the next day your sales slump and you think you are the worst and you shouldn’t be doing this anymore. However, I knew if I quit I’d never get to where I wanted to be.
Every time you figure something out, it totally changes. (i.e., the FB/Instagram algorithm)
I’ve learned to always be ready to pivot, always be learning, and to practice consistency. I’m part of a Mastermind group of Entrepreneurs that meets twice a month and we share ideas and practices and it’s one of the best things I’ve done for myself and my business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We just turned six!
We are known for our SHOWER SWIM GYM jewelry collection, an entire line of jewelry that withstands the elements and holds up. You can really do it all with these pieces!
In addition, we have an entire collection of personalized jewelry including nameplate necklaces, monogram pieces, and tons of initial pieces.
Customer Service is our #1 priority, as a business on the internet it’s important for people to know there is a face behind the screen.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
For some reason, it’s so hard to talk about myself so I called one of my best friends for help. “Am I interesting? ” I asked. Are you crazy she responded! You can dress to the nines one minute and get down and dirty on a camping weekend the next. And from there she proceeded to point out things I wouldn’t have even thought of. Yes, I’m a total tomboy in love with fashion and personal style.
Something I didn’t put together until recently is that I totally forgot that when I was in college, I sold Italian Charms/Bracelets on eBay for extra spending money, it’s as if I was always meant to sell jewelry online.
My background is pretty vast, I have an associate’s degree in Computer Information Systems, a Bachelors degree in Business Communication, an M.B.A., and a post-graduate certificate in Instructional Design & Technology.
