Community Highlights: Meet Janie Alston of Janie Empress Realtor

Today we’d like to introduce you to JANIE ALSTON.

Hi Janie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I wanted to be in law enforcement and become a Judge. I went to college for Criminal Justice and obtained my Bachelor’s degree. While in college, I needed a job after leaving the restaurant industry and landed a leasing agent position at the apartment community I was living in at the time. I instantly took off in the field, going from Leasing Agent to Leasing Manager in 6 months, to Assistant Property Manager, to Property Manager, to Portfolio Manager, and finally to Community Manager of one of the largest high-rise condominiums communities in Baltimore County. With such success in Property Management, becoming a Realtor was a no-brainer. I was already doing some of what Realtors do, so I said, why not get my license? But I procrastinated so much that it took me a year to complete the class and 3 times to pass the National portion of the exam. As a person who always excelled in school, skipped grades and had a continuous 3.9+ GPA, I couldn’t fathom how it took me 3 tries to pass the exam, especially when I knew the content like the back of my hand (let me tell you, the test is a setup, lol) and I almost gave up. But I’m glad I didn’t. At this point, Criminal Justice is far from my mind because I have found my passion, purpose, mission, and where I belong. Sometimes it happens that way, you go in one direction, and God shows you your calling, and you answer, and so I did! But some of my sternness and straightforwardness come from that CJ background.

Growing up wasn’t easy; I didn’t have much family or support. Being the first in my family to become successful was and still is my mission. It’s the driving force to why it’s hard for me to give up on anything. I am a fighter and a go-getter. I do not let anything stand in my way. Once I set my mind to something, oh, it’s happening. This mindset carries over into my real estate business. Ask any of my clients, and they’ll tell you. I don’t give up easily, and I don’t let them give up; I’m a great negotiator, and I go after what my clients need/want. A lot of what we do not have in the industry is care or “conditional care.” It’s rare to find someone so passionate about what they do that their job far exceeds the job itself and becomes care. This is me. I’ve been told many times that I care too much, and guess what? This is what sets me apart in this business because I do care.

I am huge on building relationships, and I believe this is the key to life, success, and prosperity. My clients aren’t transactional, and they become family. This is where my slogan comes from #Realtorforalifetime. Once my client(s) purchase their home, I don’t disappear. God willing, as long as I am here, I am a phone call away from them. I build relationships with contractors, vendors, etc., so my clients don’t have to overwhelm themselves with trying to find someone to help them. I get calls for anything, sometimes unrelated to real estate, but this is because of the relationships I build with people.

My first year licensed was challenging, but I took off once I got into the swing of things! Starting at my first brokerage, I was a dual career (there’s no such thing as being part-time in real estate). I became one of the top producing agents in my brokerage and was considered “part-time.” Being a mom to my wonderful little prince, long hours, nighttime and weekend home tours, writing offers while cooking dinner or writing offers while handling a leak in a tenant’s unit, to everything in between, I was determined to succeed in this business. In 2020 I merged with eXp Realty, which was the best decision for my business. It gave me the flexibility to take charge and prosper more in my business. In 2021, I prayed for a sign on what my next steps would be, and two months later, I took the leap and walked away from 12 years of Property Management and became a full-time Realtor, and I have never looked back. Now, I use my Property Management experience to guide my current and future clients on how to care for their homes, which comes in handy when doing home inspections and negotiations! I am licensed in multiple states, a Certified Mentor for new Agents, multiple designations, and so many other things. I officially announce that I have launched my real estate team, “The Empress Team.” Establishing my team will allow me to expand my services further and help more people realize their dreams!

I get asked the question all the time, “Why do you love Real Estate so much?” Real Estate isn’t just a career or business for me; it’s my passion. While the paycheck is the greatest thing, my absolute joy is helping someone get the keys to their new home. You never know what someone is going through in their lives, mentally, physically, emotionally, and being the one person someone can come to entirely with their guard down, confide in you and trust you to guide them and help them accomplish what most may be the biggest accomplishment of their life, is where the absolute joy comes in for me. Everyone has a story, and none of them are the same. I’ve seen so many life stories happen in the last 12 years that I could write a book or maybe 2 or 3. Helping someone build their legacy helps me build mine. Real Estate is my purpose!
