Community Highlights: Meet Ishmael Wilson of Fresh Dry Cleaners

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ishmael Wilson.

Hi Ishmael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into dry cleaning really started with prayer. Years ago, I was asking God to lead me into a business that could survive the ups and downs of the economy. I wanted something that people would always need, regardless of what was happening financially. As I began researching different industries, I kept coming back to dry cleaning, and I truly believe that’s where God led me.

We started with one location, and like any small business, there were a lot of long days and a lot of learning along the way. Nothing happened overnight. We just focused on taking care of people, doing quality work, and being consistent. Little by little, the business grew.

Today, we’re blessed to have five locations across the DMV. One of the highlights was being voted Best Dry Cleaner in DC in 2021. That recognition meant a lot because it came from the people we serve every day.

One of our biggest tests came during the pandemic. When people stopped going into the office and events were canceled, our industry took a major hit. There were definitely some difficult moments, but we stayed the course, made adjustments where we needed to, and by God’s grace, every one of our locations made it through. Looking back, that season reminded me why I prayed for a business with longevity in the first place.

For me, Fresh Dry Cleaners has never just been about cleaning clothes. It’s about building something that serves people, creates opportunities for others, and honors God through the way we do business. That’s really been the heart behind it from day one.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Every business has its ups and downs, and we’ve had plenty of both.

I remember one of our first years in business—we only made about $9,000 that entire year. That’s not the kind of number that makes you feel like you’ve “made it.” It was discouraging at times, but it also taught us a lot about patience, discipline, and staying committed even when the results aren’t there yet.

Then came the pandemic, and that was unlike anything we could’ve prepared for. Our business depends on people going to work, attending meetings, weddings, and events. When everything shut down, so did a large part of our industry. We had to adjust quickly, watch every dollar, find new ways to serve customers, and make smart decisions to keep the business moving forward.

Looking back, those challenges made us stronger. They forced us to become more efficient, more creative, and more intentional about how we operated. The tough seasons gave us lessons that success alone never could.

As you know, we’re big fans of Fresh Dry Cleaners. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Fresh Dry Cleaners is a full-service dry cleaning company locations across the DMV. We provide everything from everyday garment care to specialty cleaning for suits, dresses, wedding gowns, comforters, household items, and alterations. Whether it’s someone’s favorite pair of jeans or a custom suit, we treat every item with the same level of care.

What really sets us apart is our commitment to quality and customer service. We know people are trusting us with items that are valuable to them, so we take that responsibility seriously. We focus on consistency, attention to detail, and making sure every customer has a great experience every time they walk through our doors.

We’re also proud to embrace technology and convenience. From easy drop-off and pickup to text notifications and efficient turnaround times, we’ve worked to make the dry-cleaning experience as simple and reliable as possible.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust we’ve built in the communities we serve. Many of our customers have been with us for years, and a lot of our new business comes through referrals. Being recognized as one of DC’s Best Dry Cleaners was a great honor, but what’s even more meaningful is earning the loyalty of our customers over time.

At the end of the day, we’re more than just a place that cleans clothes. We help people look their best for job interviews, weddings, graduations, business meetings, and everyday life. We understand that what we do plays a small part in some of life’s biggest moments, and we don’t take that for granted.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I’ve always been a naturally curious person. I was the kid who asked a lot of questions because I genuinely wanted to understand how things worked. Whether it was business, technology, or just everyday life, I enjoyed learning and figuring things out.

I’ve also always had an entrepreneurial mindset. Even at a young age, I was interested in ideas, solving problems, and finding opportunities where others might not see them. That curiosity eventually became one of my biggest strengths because it pushed me to keep learning, keep growing, and never become comfortable with what I already knew.

I wasn’t afraid of hard work either. If there was something I wanted to accomplish, I was willing to put in the time to learn it and get better. I think that’s carried over into every area of my life and business.

Looking back, I’d say curiosity, a willingness to learn, and persistence have always been a big part of who I am. Even today, I’m still a student. I’m always reading, asking questions, and looking for ways to improve because I believe you never stop growing.
