Today we’d like to introduce you to Dulcie Smith.
Hi Dulcie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved design, particularly textiles. I grew up watching my mom decorate our family homes so I’ve always been interested in the process. I worked with a local interior design company here in Charleston, SC and after several years of gaining experience, I took a leap of faith and started my own business.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a smooth road for the most part! I had no idea what I was doing when I first started out but I definitely did in-depth research before launching. There are many steps involved in the beginning process of starting a new business so I wanted to make sure I was talking to the right people so I didn’t miss any of those important steps. Having previous experience working at a design firm and taking classes at the New York Institute of Design created a foundation that made me comfortable stepping out on my own. I’ve been so lucky and blessed to have amazing clients thus far and also to have friends and family who continue to support me daily.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Dulcie Smith Interiors?
Dulcie Smith Interiors is a small interior design firm here in Charleston, SC. I have an office with inventory at my home where I work every day. I am hopefully expanding to an office soon!
I work primarily on residential homes and I plan on sticking to that. However, I would love to decorate/design a coffee shop or something!
I am known for finding textile brands that you probably wouldn’t see every day. They aren’t your basics. I am constantly searching for different patterns and colors that will stand out and be unique. I would say that is what sets me apart from other designers. I see a lot of the same design work and schemes on Instagram (not hating, I love it all!), and I am always trying to not do the norm. Sometimes it’s hard because you get wrapped up in what people like and it makes me think, “oh I should be doing more of that or picking more of these fabrics, etc.” but then that doesn’t set me apart from anyone. I try to be myself when it comes to design, and my clients see that and appreciate it. I never take any offense if people don’t like my work, because to me, everything is art, and having an open mind in this industry allows you grow and expand. It’s what makes me proud to be a designer!
I like to be as flexible as I can with how I treat my clients and the services I offer. After talking to them and getting to know them, I try my best to create a design process for them that fits to their lifestyle.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I am extremely lucky that I am able to work for myself. I feel thankful every day and keep a strict daily schedule for myself so I never take it for granted.
