Community Highlights: Meet Catherine Dimisa of Mommy Magic Cakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Dimisa.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My giant sweet tooth is a big driving force behind my love of baking, but it wasn’t until I had my 2 amazing daughters asking for special birthday cakes (specifically Spongebob and Dora) that I tried my hand at cake decorating. Sharing this new “hobby” at work led to coworkers asking for birthday cakes, and it got to the point that I was baking and decorating cakes on a weekly basis. I baked a butterfly cake for a very close friend of mine, who asked where I bought it. It told her I did not buy it, I made it, and she told me it was so good I could sell it. At that time I had no idea it was even a possibility, but with the encouragement of my family and friends, I decided to follow my heart (and that giant sweet tooth), and jumped off the cliff into the amazing world of cake decorating. With the support of my husband and daughters, we renovated part of our home to build a custom cake shop and in January 2009 we were officially ready to open. When the kids were little and they would ask me how I made their birthday cakes, I would always say “with mommy magic”, and that was how Mommy Magic Cakes came to be. We opened our retail location in August of 2016 in Mount Airy Maryland, and we are still loving all the fun cakes and cupcakes our customers order in addition to all the goodies we make for everyday walk in business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a home based business was a challenge and most of the time it felt like running around in circles in the dark, but with the support of my family and friends, it was worth the struggle. That experience made it less chaotic when opening the retail location, but as every small business owner knows there is always a daily balance between chaos and success. I credit our ability to ride out the monster of 2020 covid, recessions, and everyday challenges on our incredible staff and clients who have been with us thru the years. We are so lucky that in this business our customers are happy people planning celebrations, and we are honored that they come to us for their cakes and cupcakes. It is such a joy to us to be able to be a small part of milestones in so many families. We have been able to be a part of birthdays, graduations, engagements, weddings, gender reveals, baby showers, baptisms, and back to birthdays!

As you know, we’re big fans of Mommy Magic Cakes. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We do custom work, and we have a walk in retail store for everyday sugar cravings. We specialize in custom cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, and we also have small cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, brownies, chocolate covered pretzels, buckeye truffes, and cookie dough bites available for walk in purchase. We have some gluten free options, but we are not an allergy free shop.

How do you define success?
We define success by having a happy staff, happy customers, joy in doing our jobs, and taking pride in our work.
