Community Highlights: Meet Capriel Phinney of Shine Mine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Capriel Phinney.

Hi Capriel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
When I was younger, I had braces! Like a lot of people, as I grew older, I immediately was attracted to nice teeth. When people ask what’s the first thing you notice about a person, that’s it for me a person’s teeth is easily the first thing I notice. When I was 18, I was looking for a job on indeed & came across an orthodontist assistant position at the same DND I went to as a child. I immediately hopped on the opportunity and Doc. John A. Yoffe made it clear during my interview that is wasn’t my resume. However, he remembered me being his a patient of his & was willing to give me a shot.

No experience, just on-the-job training & I was hooked. The dental field was definitely for me. However, there was too much room to move further within this field unless you planned on going to college and furthering your education. I’ve thought about it numerous times, and still, it comes to mind. 4 years undergrad, 4 years dental school, & 6 years of working beneath a Dentist In order to get that next level I wanted. As I dwelled on it, I stumbled across a photograph of a women with a Diamond on tooth & just had to have one. So, I started doing my own reacher to see exactly how it’s done & realized in minutes that it was the same as bonding braces & at that time already had a year of orthodontic experience under my belt.

From there, I decided that was my next move … Tooth gems. Shortly after I added on Teeth whitening as it goes hand in hand. Making $85-$125 hourly was amazing to me. I opened a door I’ve always dreamed of opening. Working less & making more. It only made since to capitalize on it, so towards the end of my 2nd year, I decided that there was room to grow & that this opportunity should be one that I give to others. I started teaching in 2021 I’ve taught & certified over 35 individual. Some in which averaged about 20 clients a week! You do the math. It instantly hit me that this is what I meant for. I’m here to lead, to impact.

It took some time but as I grew my father started to take interest in my business. He been an entrepreneur for years now, and I needed his guidance. So, we decided to partner up expand, get a location to create an experience. This is where I’m at now. 3 years ago, it was just an idea and thru time it became reality. However, with time it well become a legacy an I’ll continue to speak that into existence.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I started at a salon but this was easily a learning experience. What a lot of people don’t know is that I’m also a licensed nail tech. After school, I started working at a local salon & brought Teeth Whitening to their intention. When things started hitting a peak, I decided it was time for me to start focusing on getting my own. Not working for anyone else. Well, that backfired & I know now business is business no matter how close you think you may be with you boss.

Due to this thinking, I was fired during Covid. Which turnt out to be the best thing for me. Gave me time to rethink, apply for my LLC & pushed me to find a vendor to get cheaper products. You never know what you’re capable of until you actually have to do it. I easily learned that when 1 door closes that means the next is opening.

I had days where I made thousands & days where I made nothing. When I first started to teach it even took me to drop my prices lower to get locals to support me. What I learned from that is people want to see others support you before they do. My most recent struggle was getting discouraged while waiting for my salon furniture to get here. Not sure if it was due to Covid and the lack of work or what but I waited 7-8 months on this furniture & it just felt like the end of the world. That’s usually how things go with a small business though. It takes you to be at your lowest to prepare you for your highest. Life will definitely humble you, to prepare you mentally for your next move.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Absolutely it’s always important to move professionally and in the client’s favor. Nonrefundable deposits are important during this time. As a business owner, I count on my appointments or classes to keep things running smoothly. However, being safe is more important. A lot of appointments have been rescheduled or canceled due to unfortunate and abrupt health changes and if this get any worst then it could hurt the business.
