Community Highlights: Meet BOTL’D

Today we’d like to introduce you to BOTL’D. Them and their team share their story with us below:

It all started at the dinner table in the middle of the pandemic.

While eating dinner and getting to know each other (as new couples do 9 months into a relationship during a pandemic), Greg told Stephan his dream of owning a booze truck called “Tafya”.

Tafya — meaning alcohol in Haitian creole — would pay homage to his Haitian roots, incorporate Greg’s love of making cocktails, and would specialize in making Haitian-inspired drinks for pickup or delivery. Stephan loved the idea and encouraged Greg to pursue it. However, after some initial research into buying a truck and starting Tafya, Greg’s dream seemed unreachable.

Stephan did not let Greg’s dream die and helped revitalize it into what it is now. Using his innate creativity, Stephan came up with the trendy name, logo, and tagline, and the rest is history. Within a month of inception, BOTL’D formally launched with its Season 1 Tastes in January 2021.

It’s been a rollercoaster, but BOTL’D is a labor of faith and legacy-building for both Greg and Stephan. “It’s only upward and onward for us.”

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s taken a lot of work. We haven’t had any major obstacles per se; however, trying to balance a romantic relationship and a business has proven quite the challenge. We find ourselves having to create boundaries and make a concerted effort to carve out quality relationship time together. We are also complete opposites with conflicting viewpoints and perspectives. This comes out when we’re trying to make decisions regarding the business. Greg is more direct, forward, and unconventional. Stephan is more reserved, cautious, and conservative. Coming to a happy compromise has taken many a late-night conversation into the wee hours of the morning. All in all, we’ve found that being opposites has been quite beneficial. It’s allowed us to create our best work to date, BOTL’D.

We’ve been impressed with BOTL’D, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
BOTL’D is a Black-owned, LGBTQ+, artisanal, handcrafted, small-batch, ready-to-drink cocktail company that provides unique and delicious cocktails for every occasion in the metropolitan DMV area. BOTL’D cocktails are crafted with top-shelf spirits, natural ingredients, natural sweeteners, and no preservatives. We are also committed to sustainability so we use glass bottles instead of plastic (to allow for recycling) and a reusable cotton cinch bag as packaging for our local orders. We ship nationally as well.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Greg originally wanted to be a police officer and Stephan has never broken a bone in his body.
