Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Inman.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I usually say my story begins when I enlisted in the United States Army—specifically, the New Hampshire Army National Guard—during my senior year of high school. In April 2002, I decided to join before heading off to college. I originally signed a six-year contract and ended up serving seven. I began as an interior electrician and ultimately became a squad leader and construction supervisor. During those years, I deployed four times, including a year-long deployment to Afghanistan.
While serving, I attended the University of New Hampshire, where I studied political science. I later chose to pursue a legal career and attended George Mason University School of Law in Arlington, Virginia. My first position out of law school was with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for Arlington County and the City of Falls Church, where I worked for about five years before moving into private litigation.
During that time, I became increasingly interested in personal finance and began working through the Dave Ramsey “Baby Steps.” Paying off debt and thinking about how to build and protect wealth drew me toward estate planning. In 2020, I made the decision to shift my career from litigation to trusts and estates.
I find this area of practice deeply rewarding. Clients genuinely appreciate the work I do and can clearly see the benefit it provides for them and their families. I’m grateful to be at a point in my career where I have greater control over the clients I serve and truly enjoy the relationships I build with them. I’ve intentionally built a practice around working with people I like and respect, which has made my work far more meaningful.
Much of my practice involves helping clients navigate complex or sensitive circumstances, including planning for loved ones with special needs or managing difficult family dynamics. Being able to guide people through those situations is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first transitioned to estate planning in 2020, I struggled (like many other people at that time). I initially thought that the “3-week pause” would be a good opportunity for me to make a change in my career. The global pandemic made that transition painfully slow and I initially struggled to find clients and understand the market that I was in.
We’ve been impressed with Inman Law, PLLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Inman Law, PLLC is a law firm located in Tysons Corner, Virginia that focuses on estate planning and administration, as well as business planning. We are known for being creative and thoughtful in our approach to helping clients solve their legal problems.
We specialize in working collaboratively with our clients and their other trusted advisors.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think that estate planning will increasingly see AI assisting people with developing their estate plans. I also expect that to turn out poorly for many of the people who rely on that. Ultimately, I think it will be just another iteration of the services that already exist to help people draft their own estate plans. This won’t affect my practice much, because my market is more for people who want thoughtful counsel for their circumstances and the feeling of security in knowing that their loved ones will be taken care of.
The biggest problem with bad estate plans, is that it does not become apparent that they are bad until after the client dies or becomes disabled.
