Today we’d like to introduce you to Anisa “Ace” Turner.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started managing artists in November 2021. I honestly didn’t think I would be where I am today. My first artist was my best friend Splash from Richmond, VA. I saw something in him but he didn’t want to pursue his rap career. He’s so talented and I just knew if he had a little push he would do it. So I paid for studio time. His first time ever hearing himself in a real studio he was amazed. He told me that night if I could get him in the studio the next day he would take music seriously so I booked it that night.
And needless to say, my journey started. I went from one to 5 in a matter of 3 days. People saw I was managing and they started coming to me. I’ve always loved music, I was a promoter in high school for go-go bands and an artist by the name of Yung Cyph from Stafford, VA. I love helping people. I was raised off on love, my heart is different. In the beginning, I didn’t charge artists for me to manage them. I had 5 artists under me for free. I also didn’t do contracts. When I started getting my foot in the industry and actually having sit-downs, and speaking with A&R execs and so on is when I realized I was going to be bigger than I thought.
I went to 10 artists really quickly. Then I started doing contracts and fees. Now I have 8. I sat down with my first label, Authentic Empire in December-January. And I learned a lot. I also realized everything they offer I can offer too. I was already offering it. The only difference is I don’t have the name behind me. I don’t have the money behind me. I don’t have the distribution behind me. That’s the only difference. So I started charging artists to have me as their manager, I only charge $500 to get started.
And after that first fee, I have a monthly payment which is based on what each artist can afford. I’ve always told artists money isn’t a factor for me not only because I still have a 9-5 and I own another business for my daughters but I feel we are in this together we are coming up together. Why would I take money out of your mouth when I need you to invest in your craft, your brand? You are your brand. So my monthly fees start anywhere from $100 to $300. But that also depends on what I do for each artist as well. I’ve been on tour with Enchanting the female artist in 1017. That was an experience as well. I offer shows, promos, clothing line start-ups, websites, mock-ups, logo designs, and pretty much whatever the artists need to market themselves!
I have my own connections and I reach out to them and get the show on the road. I love what I do. I help others out of the kindness of my heart. Because I know what it’s like trying to get yourself out there. A share means something. A like means something, a comment means something. Just support! Support the people around you. Never stop posting your craft, your business, and your brand because someone is always watching!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. There have been times when I didn’t know how I was going to make ends meet and still do my part as a manager. But I prayed. I made it happen. Times I was going through h*ll but I still posted and uplift others. I stood my ground and home fell in place.
There were times we went on the road with enough money for gas and food, but we still made it happen. We were in it together. I won’t allow one of mine to struggle alone as they won’t allow me to. I’m thankful for the artists I do have because they have made a way when I didn’t have it!
We’ve been impressed with Ace of Spades Management, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The meaning behind my brand is pretty dope. I call myself Ace. I came up with this when I was trying to branch off of my daughter’s cosmetics business “Laiche Collection”. I wanted to have clothing like called Ace of Spades collection. Then I started managing and I just took the collection off and made it manageable.
As you know the ace is the most valued card in the deck when playing spades. In each game, the value changes. I consider myself the most valued player in the game and depending on what it is my value changes but it’s still valued. So I win either way. I’m either going to take it there or help you get there, either way, ima make it happen for you. And that is why I believe I am different from other brands.
I am proud that people trust me with their careers. If I can make it happen I do if I can’t I will have someone that can. I don’t sugarcoat anything I always tell them how it is and what it is going to be. And that’s why I believe I have so many people interested in me. And it’s not about money. Which is different for people nowadays.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe my luck has been good so far. I’ve had a few instances where bad luck played a factor but you have to learn to let things play and realize everything happens for a reason.
