Community Highlights: Meet Angel King Wilson of Silent Books Publishing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel King Wilson.

Hi Angel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I attended the University of Baltimore and received my MFA in Creative Writing and Publishing Arts in 2019. While in grad school, I learned the basics of self-publishing and was able to self-publish my first book, Am I Doing This Right?

I knew I wanted to start my own company since I had acquired skills and knowledge about the publishing field. I also had a passion to help other create and sell their own stories.

During the pandemic, I was able to dedicate an ample amount of time to building my self-publishing company, Silent Books Publishing. Our first year in business, we helped eight authors self-publish their books. One of our authors received the 2021 Best-seller Award at Red Emma’s Bookstore.

As Silent Books Publishing continues to grow, we will continue to help authors self-publish high quality books by way of editing, book design and distribution. I believe self-publishing will become a tool for many to pursue their dreams of becoming an author. Silent Books Publishing serves to help self-published authors produce the best book possible.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say that it’s been a smooth road, but I will say that I have stayed positive throughout the process. Some struggles have included hiring different designers so that we can produce high quality illustrations and layouts, undercharging because I didn’t feel qualified as a self-starting entrepreneur, educating myself on aspects of the self-publishing process, building partnerships, and understanding finances and taxes.

Every entrepreneur will run into challenges, but the key is to stay positive. I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t believe I could figure it out. I believe God gave me this idea, so I know that He has an answer for every obstacle that I face. And honestly, things have been working out for me. So I’m going to just keep building. I am enjoying this journey of growing my business and defeating the challenges.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Silent Books Publishing is an independent publishing company that helps authors self-publish their books. We specialize in editing and book design. We also offer book printing, we will upload our clients’ book to Amazon KDP and provide language for them to pitch their book to local bookstores. Our goal is to prepare the client to be an “authorpreneur”.

Silent Books Publishing is a hands on company – this sets us apart from other self-publishing companies. We have Zoom meetings and email communication with our clients throughout the process of creating their book. We work with our clients until they are satisfied with the final product.

I am most proud of the resilience, professionality, and commitment that myself and my team has shown to keep Silent Books Publishing a high standard company.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One thing about me that people would be surprised to know is that I was diagnosed with lead poisoning when I was two years old. My work outside of being an entrepreneur involves being an activist and educating people about lead poisoning in Baltimore, MD. I recently released a documentary titled, “Hiding in the Walls” that conveys the history and impact of lead poisoning in Baltimore and the various effects that lead poisoning has on people. The film was selected for 2022 International Maryland Film Festival.
