Meet Zeriaya Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zeriaya Jones.

Hi Zeriaya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I first started in cosmetology school in my 10th grade year of high school. I used to get teased a lot in middle school about my appearance and hair, so I really went in wanting to prove something. But as I got further and further in, I realized I actually loved doing hair and it was so much more than just surface-level appearance. I realized I love Making women feel beautiful and bringing my own twist into the hair game. So all throughout high school in my program, I started taking a few clients and researching more and more outside the classroom, that’s what I was known for there.

In 12th grade, when it was time to take our licensing test, I was the first one in my class to pass and get it. However, I also found out I was pregnant so it pushed me back a little because I wasn’t focused on building a brand I was focused on becoming a mother – it took me almost two years to get my groove back. Once I had my son and got settled into being a mother, I wanted to open my books again and that’s what I did, the right way. I set up all my systems and place and marketed and posted on my social media like crazy. Now I’m not where I want to be but I have a established a good clientele that’s steadily building. I advocated for new level styling in a relaxed environment with the ethics and priority of hair care!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Loosing motivation was definitely a big struggle for me. Once I had my son, I lost confidence in myself so in turn, I stopped doing everything I loved most, including hair. I was so wrapped up in being a mom and my own insecurities I neglected everything else. I let it give me an excuse to be lazy and not go after my dreams. Also, I had a few people I considered the closest to me tell me it wasn’t a real job so it shot me down even more. Until that is I realized I could prove them wrong.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hairstylist specializing in silk presses and extensions (micro links and sew-ins). I am known for silk presses mostly and getting women on a regimen to get their hair back on track to a healthy path. I am most proud of my recent rebrand to my company nueessentials. It is what my hairstyling brand name is now. I was able to rebrand that and, within six weeks, made it very high in the 4 figure range just doing hair. What sets me apart from others is that I truly cater to the client’s personal needs and wants in addition to haircare. I put my integrity as a stylist first and I will always ensure health first so if that means turning a client down, I will.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for anyone just starting out is be consistent! Never give up. It doesn’t matter if you post the same thing week after week; someone new will see it each time. If you lack consistency and discipline, that will be your downfall those are a must. I wish I knew this earlier because my brand could have been so much farther if I would have never gave up. Where motivation lacks discipline fills up and that is the difference between successful people and the stagnant.

  • Microlinks – $250
