Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Meeker Pickett.
Hi Theresa Pickett, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Theresa. I own Enjoying Family Life, a blog that aims to inspire families to enjoy spending quality time together. Enjoying Family Life shares articles in the topics of Entertainment, Gift Guides, Travel, Recipes, Family, and Homemaking. It’s about being a mother of two tween daughters and finding joy in everyday life. I’m always on the lookout for trending new products, movie releases, and free printable activities to share. On social media, I share more local travel tips with kid-friendly outings, such as Restaurant Week, art festivals, and more.
As a content creator, I enjoy capturing light and motion, especially moments in childhood since that time passes quickly. I like to create content that tells a story visually. Blogging has created somewhat of a scrapbook of memories, but I have also worked on the production of movies, gaining credits as a producer, casting director, publicist, and actress.
It is fun and fulfilling when these two interests connect. Years after moving here to the Baltimore area, while working as a teacher and blogging late into the night, I received an email from Disney asking to fly me out to Los Angeles to write and share videos from the red carpet for the premiere of ‘Coco’ and ‘Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.’ I also took a drawing lesson from the animators of ‘Olaf’s Frozen Adventure!’
Seeing the filmmakers arriving on the red carpet, I realized how proud they must be that the colorful decorations, lively music, and delicious food were there to celebrate their creative work. The best part wasn’t just meeting the celebrities, although I did tear up when Idina Menzel smiled for my photo, or wearing a beautiful, gold, sparkly dress. My favorite memory was when I interviewed the filmmakers about what the movie meant to them. When they shared stories of inspiration from their families and culture, I realized that Disney magic had helped to weave the filmmaker’s memories and creative ideas into a hit movie that people of any age could connect with and sing along to while watching.
During the pandemic, I realized that doing what I loved mattered most, and a big part of that was focusing on family, which is where Enjoying Family Life came from at the time. Maybe it was the quote, “Seize your moment” from Ernesto de la Cruz in ‘Coco,’ and hearing the filmmakers talking about that concept that made me start to consider whether I had truly seized the moment in my life. In addition to being more available to my family, and launching Enjoying Family Life, I also created virtual filmmaking camps with a red carpet party for students to celebrate the creation of their movies.
The camps began with an American Girl theme since I collaborated with the company to market their annual Girl of the Year release. Then, I created classes that focus on stop motion with any toy, clay, or paper. I lead by example as a caring educator and always try to make learning fun! This also helps make the classroom a welcoming space for creative ideas and talking about inspiration.
My daughters have been a big part of my blogging for years, but making movies together has been one of our favorite types of content to create. Some of the movies won awards and played in festivals! ‘A Halloween Sleepover,’ which was made in my doll stop motion class, was selected by several festivals. Another mixed media short film ‘Twisted in Time’ was also an official selection.
Our family visited Ocean City, Maryland, when my daughter’s movie ‘The Power of Play,’ featuring our family dog Coco, screened and won a People’s Choice Award at the Ocean City Film Festival. Seeing our dog on the big screen of a movie theater inspired me to write an episodic story or a story with mini episodes released one at a time. It is called ‘Colette Goes to Hollywood,’ and you can find it on Kindle Vella.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
As the owner of a website, I am constantly maintaining it and networking to find new ideas for content. Being a family blogger can also be a challenge because we all have to find joy in the creation of the content, not just the results. We’re always looking to cover experiences that are memorable because those have been some of our favorite articles and videos to make.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Enjoying Family Life is currently working on its Back to School Guide 2022 and Christmas Gift Guide 2022. I am always open to receiving pitches from companies, including local ones, who would like to expand their reach, have original content to share, and increase search engine optimization.
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is family, being true to myself, and being a nice person. This all connects back to that idea of seizing the moment and realizing that 1.) Taking care of my family is enough, 2.) Finding fulfillment is possible, and 3.) Prioritizing those first two will give me the energy to be a joyful person who is nice to be around, which makes family life much better. I hope anyone who is trying to learn to make priorities in their own life, but might need some help, can join me at Enjoying Family Life.
