Check Out Sophie Macaluso’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Macaluso.

Hi Sophie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up assisting my mom – a timeless wedding photographer – where I learned the basics of photography, light, client relationships, and freelancing early on. She taught me so much of what I know! I went to American University for Political Science, but in my first job after graduating realized I was missing out on building something of my own.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, yes! Around two years ago when I decided to quit my job and freelance full time, I put a lot of work in on the back end that’s slowly paying off. Pitching my work, rebuilding my contacts, reaching out to past clients, and dedicating time to marketing and social media.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer – most of my work is commercial, whether that’s food, hospitality, events, and brands. I love smart lighting, lots and lots of color, kitschy touches, and contextual meaning. My goal is for clients to find something new in their gallery every time they revisit it. I’m most proud of client relationships I’ve built and the way that people trust my vision, that’s what success means to me.

What makes you happy?
Taking photos – I’ve always been the friend trailing behind the group to take a photo of something. Special lighting and a unique color palette will always excite me. On top of that, my fiancé and our wiener dog Cowboy!
