Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Collier Myers.
Sean Collier, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
What’s up Baltimore!! I started as a Baltimore County football player who grew up around performance and fell in love with it. My father, Dr. Bill Myers, has been a world renowned vocal coach and composer long before I was born. Maryland Sings, singers from all around the state performing classics to contemporary music live on stage in America and abroad. I was his right hand in moving, setting up and operating much of the equipment needed for theatrical production. I found tremendous joy in this and in an effort to explore talent, he gave me the spotlight performing a solo dance to “Man in the Mirror” while his students sang offstage at Broadway on Main Street.
After completing my first audition, which you can read the full story in Voyage Miami, he looked at me and with all the Godly innocence said, “Son, this is what you need to do the rest of your life.” This gave me the initial confidence in pursuing acting.
I landed my first agent, started taking classes and began working throughout the DMV shortly after. My mother, my #1 fan, took me to just about every set as I got started. We even had production label her lunch, “MOM”. I want her to enjoy the benefits that her son being in film brings, as she’s been a monumental support in almost everything I’ve done in this industry. “Momma gets her dream house and the meals along the way!” mentality.
During my short time at Shenandoah University for acting, I quickly developed skills in filmmaking by organizing and shooting a few music videos.
Soon after, I joined my brother and personal trainer, Will Myers Jrs, entrepreneurial footsteps and placed acting part time. We started a gym, learned martial arts and grew through the grit of business.
My best friend and future bodyguard Josh White and I ran a staffing company throughout my 2nd hometown Ocean City, MD for many years. At this time, I traveled back and forth to the DMV for commercials such as ‘Koons Automotive’, ‘ Dicks Sporting Goods’ and for 3 seasons of extra work on ‘House of Cards’. My first stunt production was on ‘The Sultan and the Saint’, where I met my “cousin” and mentor, Lyon Beckwith, who opened many, many doors for me. Soon after came my first SAG production, ‘Gangsters’ available on Prime Video. Building a great support group in OCMD, I wrote and shot a film, ‘Jackpot’, alongside making cocktail videos and car dealership commercials launching Collier Films, my YouTube channel.
I traveled to Miami in hopes of presenting in film festivals to gain funding for more projects, but God had other plans! Yes, we were in Miamis’ First Time Filmmakers, but no funding came. Instead, I learned many more humbling lessons about our industry. I was able to work with a few agencies, booking me as a guest star on the series ‘Wolf’ while helping great friends of mine open Swizzle Rum Bar & Drinkery in South Beach. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, all production stopped so I moved closer to my family.
I began working with PLUSH Vodka, a black owned high quality vodka. This gave me the opportunity to travel the eastern shore selling our vodka, teaching cocktails and working with a couple film companies to include our materials on set including the gripping film ‘Gimme the Loot’. Doors began to open in acting again as I booked the lead role in ‘A Mothers Daughter’, which gained massive popularity on Tubi. Then, I took a professional dive in getting to know the DMV market. Here I built a bond with some of the most driven people, dedicated to learning this craft. I am humbled to say the past 4 years working in the DMV led to BET+, Tubi, Prime Video Paramount + and currently over 5 films circulating festivals. Subtle appearances in ‘A Wesley Christmas’ and the new ‘Dexter Resurrection’ to leading fight choreography for ‘Flood 2’, main roles in ‘Black Thunder’ and ‘Night Haul’ (IMDb link below)
Recently, the depth of my reasoning for acting has grown tremendously. I’ve taken this more seriously by diligently working closely with a manager, 2 coaches, multiple classes, a photographer, a therapist and inspiring colleagues to push me to my fullest potential.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I live by Yin/Yang. “Can’t have any good, without a little bad. Vice versa. You must balance this, in the circle of life.” Every smooth road has had potholes underneath and I’ve learned your reaction in the beginning and what you learn at the end are all that matters. I’ve had cars break down on the way to set, trimmers guards fall off mid trim cutting a section bald, actors not knowing their lines, production companies not honoring agreements, you name it. The response is, “What value am I being taught and how do I move forward?” calming all clouded reactions to obstacles and challenges. I’ve learned to give myself time, our most precious commodity, for preparation and punctuality. I’ve learned to set boundaries, to respect who I am and what is fair. I’ve learned it takes a village, opening my circle to give and receive support. I’ve learned to practice grace because we all have a story. Most importantly, I’ve learned patience, full faith in His plan. Let go and let God!!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a humble servant of God, consistently growing through life and my passion. Utilizing all of my gifts, I’m able to connect and heal His children. Including myself. Whether we have a therapy session or a guided meditation, each day is another opportunity to be. I’ve become infatuated with learning and growth, believing each and every one of us has such potential while accepting “who/where people are” in their lives. For takeaways, discussions, and meditation practices, visit the Facebook group I’m building, Sean’s Qi Gong. For film, I’ve been known to add value on set. Being blessed with my families natural gifts and beginning my career on a major network, I grew to have a keen eye, ear and hustle for proper production. There have been a few instances while directing where I’ve been able to use every ounce of the accumulated knowledge leading to, in my eyes, a brilliant cast telling such a story. Taking my craft with the most seriousness, I have yet to miss a line or be late and wont miss a beat jumping in to coach actors or pick up the camera. (When necessary)
Collier Films, my side project, is where I use my talents on my own to see what I can create! Short films, cocktail and trending videos, commercials and more! See my links below!
We’ve reached many goals where 13yr old me would be in awe and the current 31yr old me is content, but as the industry is ever evolving, so are my goals. Now, we are gearing towards acting regularly in television!
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see this industry simply becoming a bigger outlet for creativity. With all of our streaming services, countless content can be uploaded which gives creatives ultimate freedom to create. Many more actors will have their opportunity to do so, as well as the crew. I’m inspired by seeing the growth happening around me. New podcasts, film distributions, premieres and filming happening every other week! There is an unstoppable force in the DMV, growing in film making and talent. Now, integrating AI, there is no limit to the creation available and I’m honored to be involved in the process. I would love to see the continual increase in support for independent film. This is where we all start, our talent roots if you will. I’d like to see funding towards these projects so talent may be respectfully paid for their time on and off set preparing, even though we do it because it’s a passion. I’d love to see studios open their doors to speak with some of the creatives who work hard in this industry as I know a list of people who deserve this and some of them you’ll see in this magazine! See you at the movies!
