Check Out Sarah Mens’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Mens

Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up I always knew I wanted to do hair. I can remember telling my grandparents as a teenager that I would one day own my own hair salon. It has been a passion of mine to help others and make them feel like the best version of themselves. Right after I graduated high school I enrolled in cosmetology school at Robert Paul academy in timonium. After graduation from cosmetology school in 2010 my journey began in the hair industry. Over the years I worked at a few different salons where I gained a lot of knowledge and experience learning from other stylists who had been in the industry for many years. I have truly enjoyed the last 14 years getting to know so many wonderful clients and stylists in the industry and growing in my career. This past year I was starting to feel like I was wanting more for my life and wanting to take my career to the next level. So a few months ago I made a decision to turn my lifelong dream into a reality. I met another amazing stylist a few years ago who shared the same passion for this industry as I do and we decided to partner up and open our own suite. We opened our doors of V & M Hair Studio on September 14th of this year and it has been the best decision I have made for my career thus far. It hasn’t always been easy but growth can sometimes be challenging. We have big goals for V & M Hair Studio and we will work hard to achieve them.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been some bumps in the road along way but that’s to be expected when starting your own business. Anything that’s worth it is not always easy. After being in the industry for almost 15 years and working for other people throughout my entire career, it was honestly a little scary taking this leap and becoming my own boss. There was a lot of fear but I knew I was capable of making this happen, all I had to do was walk through the fear. This was a whole new level of responsibility but I finally felt like I was ready for it. I also have a wonderful buisness partner and we just click so well together so that has made this transition a lot smoother. We have been there to support each other through the good and the bad of this entire journey.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in color, highlighting, and color correcting. I love a good before and after, turning my client around at the end and seeing their reaction and the smile on their face when they see themselves in the mirror. Hair is my passion and I can be a little bit of a perfectionist so every detail matters. I take my time and really listen to what my clients are telling me their vision is and I do my best to give them exactly what they want.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Honestly, I do not believe in “luck”. I believe we all make our own decisions in life that put us on the paths we are on. Some of us make decisions that put us on the paths we are destined for and others make decisions that veer them off of that path. When we do the right things for the right reasons good things tend to happen. But when we are constantly making bad decisions and repeating patterns and behaviors that never did us any good in the past, the universe has its own way of trying to realign us to put us back on the right path. I didn’t always make the right decisions in life. It took me a long time and a lot of trials and tribulations over the years but I don’t regret a thing because without it I wouldn’t be the woman I am today. I have grown so much over the years and I am so excited to see what the future holds for me and for V & M Hair Studio.
