Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Voelpel.
Rebecca, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started dancing competitively in the Baltimore area at a very young age. I knew from the start that I loved being on stage and performing. I also knew that I was at my best when I was active and moving. After high school, I took a year off to dance professionally with the Washington Ballet in D.C. but didn’t love the competitive nature of the work environment. It was then, that I knew that something more team-oriented suited me. I went to Towson University and joined the dance team. After undergrad, I felt a little lost as I was no longer dancing, and wanted to stay active beyond school. I had an amazing friend and mentor who knew me from the ‘dance world’ who recommended I obtain a barre certification. Not being one for public speaking at the time, I was very skeptical but thought I would give it a shot. I got barre certified in 2015 and immediately fell in love with being on stage again in a new capacity and helping people live healthier and more active lives, After getting barre certified, I was addicted, and couldn’t learn enough about the fitness industry and all that it has to offer.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say my fitness journey and building a business have been smooth, but it has definitely been fun! COVID taught me a lot about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of community. Two years ago when everything shut down, there were no more in-person classes or fun fitness events and happy hours. There were no more high fives after classes or smiling faces in the studio. It taught me a lot about what really matters – and that’s connecting with people, helping them feel their best, and celebrating our bodies moving together! I never thought I wanted to be a virtual trainer but COVID opened up some opportunities and time that I didn’t have prior. Now, I get to train people all over the world from my home. I would have never had the opportunity to do that, without taking that non-negotiable pause.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Group Fitness Instructor and Personal trainer specializing in barre, pilates, HIIT, cycle, pre/post natal classes, and strength training. I am known for helping people find the joy in movement, understanding that exercise could and should be fun, that not every day is going to be the best day but it’s about consistently showing up for you each day that makes the difference. I always say in class, that I want members to leave with a little more strength in their step and a smile on their faces. If they aren’t excited to come back to class again, then I didn’t do my job. I am very big on taking what you need from workouts as well. You may not always feel 100% and that’s ok – you’ve got to take what you need from your workout that day – whether it’s taking it easy or pushing the boundaries. My job is to guide you through that workout and help you feel proud and excited about the work that you just completed.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love how centrally located we are. You can be on backroads or on the highway in 5 minutes. I love the people too. The friendliness of our neighborhood is so fun and makes me feel like I have known everyone for ages even if we just met. I don’t love the cold – if it were 80 degrees all year long, we’d be golden!
