Check Out Omolola Ashley Akinrimisi’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omolola Ashley Akinrimisi.

Hi Omolola Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello, thank you so much for this opportunity! I am Omolola Ashley Akinrimisi, the founder and head MUA and Hairstylist for Lola Luxe Beauty. I am a professional hairstylist and makeup artist with over 6 years of experience in the beauty industry. Initially self-taught, I recently certified as a licensed cosmetologist. I am passionate about using makeup to bring out the inner Luxe Beauty in all my clients!

I am from Nigeria, and I was born in Maryland. My mom was a major influence in my career in hair and makeup, although my mom is currently a Nollywood actress in Nigeria with many of her movies on Netflix, she was initially a licensed cosmetologist and she previously owned a salon. I remember always being in her salon as a child, watching her do hair and I remember reading her hair books and makeup magazines. My dad is also an entrepreneur, in the business of logistics with an international shipping company and he is very hardworking and passionate about his business. So, I feel both my mom and dad’s creative and entrepreneurial spirits influenced me into being the business owner and entrepreneur that I am today. Growing up with both of my parents being business owners, it seemed normal to me to be a business owner and entrepreneur. I started my business small taking clients, building my brand, and taking every opportunity I was presented with from doing makeup for my church plays to doing hair and makeup for high school modeling team.

Today, I work with award-winning photographers, models, couture designers, and artists to bring beauty in collaboration with numerous brands for film/TV, theatre, and fashion shows. I also work with bridal, prom, holiday, and any other clients interested in elevating their look for any event. From New York Fashion Week to amazing weddings and special events across the country, I am privileged to apply my talents to service clients from all walks of life. My work has been featured in Essence Magazine and FOX 5 News.

In 2016, I launched Lola Luxe Beauty dedicated to bringing my expertise in hair and makeup to clients looking for a luxurious experience from an artist that’s attentive, that listens, and that’s passionate about making them look absolutely flawless. I’ve honed my craft over several years, and look forward to bringing everyone the Lola Luxe Beauty experience!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, from trying to establish my brand to creating my booking website it has not been easy. For instance, the current Covid 19 Pandemic has been a major obstacle for me. It has been beyond tough for many of us to adjust to this “new normal” since the start of the pandemic. COVID-19 has changed the world as we know it. Everyday amenities and experiences have been taken from us all due to the pandemic. And as a business owner, it was a struggle the first year of the pandemic having no clients and making no money. We are two and a half years in and there is still no clear end in sight, although there appears to be glimmers of hope. I had to dig deep and find the inner hustle and determination to deal with these unprecedented times. So, I created a blog to speak to my clients, it kept my occupied and allowed me to create a relationship with my clients. I am blessed to say that last year I had more clients and bookings than I have ever had!

I tell my clients on my blog that times like this allow us to take a deeper look at what really matters in life. We’ve adjusted and are trying to carry on with our lives, but now with a focus on the important things. This is a great opportunity to get creative, to get in tune with ourselves, and to prioritize the things that really matter. Before the pandemic, the world was moving so fast and now we are all forced to pause and reflect. To reflect on this pandemic is to reflect on the lives lost, the change in our freedoms, the adjustment in school schedules and work arrangements – it’s to realize how STRESSFUL this time has been. There’s a serious need for self-care and self-work at this time, because just as COVID-19 was on the rise so were our collective stress levels. So how do you handle your stress? How often are you experiencing stress? Do you try to deal with it at all? How and when do you take time to relax? Is working remotely causing more or less stress? These are important questions we must ask ourselves. Everything happens for a reason, and there is no time like the present to pause and take a beat to explore how you’re feeling.

A great way to handle stress is by finding ways to feel better about yourself. Studies have proved that when you look good you feel better. And though looking good isn’t the single answer to good mental health, it is a great start. As a working woman, I think it is easy to forget about yourself and to prioritize everything and everyone else over yourself. But take it from me, that only causes you more stress. Getting everything on your checklist done can make one feel very accomplished, however, if you’re not feeling good about yourself, somehow it feels like you still have tons of more work to do. In order to be in the best position to serve everything and everyone else, you must first feel your best. Take care of yourself. Getting your hair and makeup done to go out or even to stay in can do a lot for your self-esteem. On top of the fact that hair upkeep is important for your health, getting your hair done can honestly make you feel like a new woman! It recharges your mind; it allows you to feel capable and prepared to tackle anything that life may throw at you.

At Lola Luxe Beauty, we believe in self-care being transformational! So here are some ways to get in on the Luxe transformation experience – try a new hairstyle for the spring, schedule an Easter or spring photoshoot for you or your family, and book to do your makeup, gift a loved one with a makeup service for their birthday! Recharge, reevaluate, and refuse to be held down by stress! Lola Luxe Beauty is here to help!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a black woman that has been both a client and a provider of beauty services, my experience in the beauty industry shapes my brand and the care I bring to each and every service. My experience has been like many black women and people. We have been left out of the “luxury” experience for a long time, and in too many ways, we still are. For years, black women were overlooked by the beauty industry. From foundation color ranges that seemed to end before they reached the rich tapestry of our varied brown skin tones to hair products with the wrong ingredients for our hair, black women – black people – have had to be careful researchers, taking extra precautions to get the right service. Many times, I’ve had new clients ask me whether they should bring their own foundation for service due to their past experience of getting the wrong color match. So as a black artist, being inclusive is very important to me.

Advancement in recent years has unleashed black-owned brands like Fenty Beauty, Pat McGrath Labs, Mielle Organics, Shea Moisture, among many more. These companies have done a marvelous job of catering to the black community and our needs and allowing black women/people to take part in beauty and luxury. Inspired by these brands, I created Lola Luxe Beauty Services as a realization of the vision that black beauty services can be opulently luxurious, highly personalized, and tailored to us.

With uncompromising passion, I am committed to a bespoke experience that leaves you feeling like your best version of glamorous! Beyond providing a wide range of black-tailored products, I work tirelessly to research and practice all kinds of methods and styles to better serve my clients. You are my priority. And as a black woman, I know what it’s like to feel unseen and unheard. I love who I am and where I come from, so I love you and what makes you who you are.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality and characteristics that have been most important in my success has been elite professionalism, determination, proactiveness, and resourcefulness.
