Check Out Lawrence Harris’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawrence Harris.

Hi Lawrence, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started making music because it was always something that felt natural to me. I’ve always had a lot to say, a lot on my mind, and music became the way I could really put it all somewhere. I started off just experimenting, finding my sound, and recording whenever I could. Over time, I stopped trying to sound like anybody else and started focusing on being myself.

As I kept working, putting songs out, and learning from everything around me, Smokeybgeekin became more than just a name — it became the sound and the identity I was building. I’m still growing, still figuring things out, and still getting better with every song. I’m not really in a rush to be anything other than myself. I just want to keep making real music, build something that lasts, and let the people who listen grow with me.

I feel like I’m only at the beginning of the story. The goal is bigger than just having a few songs or getting attention. I want to leave something behind that people can feel and remember.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve had moments where I questioned myself, dealt with setbacks, and had to figure things out without always having the support or resources I wanted. There were times when it felt like I was putting in work and not seeing the results right away.

But I learned that’s really part of it. Every setback taught me something, whether it was about the music, the people around me, or myself. I stopped looking at obstacles as reasons to slow down and started looking at them as motivation. I’m still going through things, but I feel like everything I’ve been through is becoming part of the story and the sound. I wouldn’t change the journey — the hard parts made me more focused on where I’m trying to go.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a rapper and artist from Baltimore, and I go by SmokeybGeekin. I make Hip-Hop that’s really based around my world, my experiences, and the way I see things. I’ve been dropping music for a few years now, and I’ve built my sound by just experimenting and staying true to what feels natural to me.

I’d say what separates me is that I’m not really trying to fit into one box. I like switching it up, whether that’s the production, the flows, the melodies, or the way I approach a song. I want people to hear a song and know it’s me without me having to tell them.

I’m probably most proud of the fact that I kept creating and putting music out even when nobody was really watching. I’ve built a catalog, developed my own identity, and kept progressing without waiting for somebody else to validate it. I’m still figuring out exactly how far this can go, but I know I have something that’s mine.

At the end of the day, SmokeybGeekin is bigger than just being a rapper. It’s a whole sound, a mindset, and a world that I’m still building. I’m just focused on making the music better, reaching more people, and leaving my own mark on Baltimore and wherever the music takes me.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I feel like risk-taking is really just a part of being Smokeybgeekin. I’ve always been willing to bet on myself, especially with music, because I know where I’m trying to go. Coming from where I’m from, you learn pretty early that nothing is guaranteed, so I’d rather take a chance on my talent and my vision than play it safe and wonder what could’ve happened. I’ve taken risks with my sound, my image, and the moves I’ve made for my career. Some worked out, some didn’t, but all of them made me sharper. I’m not into taking dumb risks just for the story — I move how I move because I believe in myself. At the end of the day, I’d rather risk losing while chasing my dream than stay comfortable and never know how far Smokeybgeekin could’ve gone.
