Check Out Keishlyn Calhoun’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keishlyn Calhoun.

Hi Keishlyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Anguilla in the Caribbean. I grew up around my aunts who baked for birthdays and holiday seasons!

This rubbed off on me, which led me to venture into baking myself. However, it wasn’t until my second year in college that I found my gift of decorating cakes!

Also, being away from my island, I craved island desserts that I grew up eating and decided to start baking treats that reminded me of home and the rest is history! Now, I want to share those flavors with the rest of MD and eventually the world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a self-taught baker, you will hit some bumps in the road. There’s a lot to navigate and figure out – business legalities, taxes, and so forth but also, understanding how to build a brand and retain customers.

I’m still figuring things out as I go but also celebrating the wins. It has not always been easy, but I am someone who never gives up!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Sweet Island Creations is not just a cake company… we aim to incorporate my Caribbean culture into my treats – whether it’s the flavor or origin of ingredients. Specializing in intimate (small) wedding and event cakes, cupcakes, cake jars and island treats!

I love that I can remain authentic and offer both unique flavors as well as traditional flavors.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite memory that I think about often, is my first “Cake Business” haha. I was about 12 or 13; I remember baking and selling chocolate cakes to my aunts and uncles trying to make extra money for Christmas gifts!

It was so good that one of my uncles was a repeat customer and bought one every weekend. Fun fact, I still use that recipe!
