Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Acosta.
Hi Joseph, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My love for hip-hop started in the early 90s while watching Yo MTV Raps. As a kindergartener, my mom would have it playing for me when I got home. It was like a breath of fresh air for me. Being born with a stutter hindered me from speaking in general, but I found that when I’d sing along to a song word for word, it would flow effortlessly. Hip-hop gave me an identity and inspired me to pursue my passion for music.
I hold on to the essence of hip-hop, and it’s where I get my style from. I’m from the west coast, but I have an east coast style. Hip-hop has always been about self-expression and telling your story, and that’s what I strive to do with my music. It’s more than just a genre of music; it’s a culture and a way of life.
Hip-hop has given me a platform to share my voice and connect with others who may have had similar struggles. I’m grateful for the impact it’s had on my life and the lives of so many others. Hip-hop isn’t just music; it’s a movement, and I’m proud to be a part of it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey as an artist has been far from easy. It all started with my speech impediment, which made it difficult for me to communicate with others. I would stutter horribly and people would laugh at me, which made me feel embarrassed and isolated. However, I found solace in art and it became a lifelong passion for me.
Growing up in the hood as a Mexican man in the US was tough. Drugs, violence, gangs, and death were common occurrences. I was raised by a single dad who did his best to provide for us. Despite the challenges, I was determined to tell my story through my art.
The LA hip-hop scene was particularly difficult for me as a Chicano artist. I caught flack from the locals, but I held on to what I believed in. My skill level and dedication to the culture helped me overcome financial burdens, life occurrences, depression, and mental health issues. I continue to fight through it all to give my fans the best of me and put my heart into everything I do.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a member of a unique group of independent hip-hop artists, I am proud to be a part of what many are calling the new Renaissance of hip-hop. It is a challenging time to navigate the competitive waters of the industry, but I am confident in my skills and abilities to represent my side with a seasoned style and a unique voice.
My approach to hip-hop is to bring my own story and perspective to the table. While others may have similar messages, I believe that my delivery and style are what sets me apart. I have spent years perfecting my craft and I am pleased to see that my hard work is finally paying off.
As the standards for hip-hop continue to rise, I am committed to staying true to my roots and representing my side with pride. Whether I am performing in front of a small crowd or a large audience, I am confident in my ability to hold it down and make a lasting impression. I bring that MIJOMUSIC to the table.
What makes you happy?
Happiness is a feeling that comes from within, and for me, it’s all about seeing the people I love happy and healthy. Spending time with my family, pets, and mijos is what brings me the ultimate happiness. I cherish every moment we share, and it fills me with joy to see them doing things that make them happy.
New experiences are also a source of happiness for me, especially when shared with my loved ones. Whether it’s trying out a new activity or exploring a new place, the excitement of the unknown and the joy of discovery make me feel alive. And when I see the smiles on the faces of those I’m with, it makes the experience even more special.
As a musician, seeing people enjoy my music and sharing in my growth brings me immense happiness. Being able to tell my story through my art is a privilege, and knowing that it resonates with others is a feeling like no other.
Overall, happiness for me is about the simple things in life – love, health, and the joy of shared experiences.
