Hi Josei, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My business was started in my living room in SE Washington, DC back in 2015. The journey was literally “proof of concept”. I had no idea I was launching a business, let alone changing the trajectory of my life and my family’s lives.
The corporate jobs and training I’d had throughout my professional career have helped me as an entrepreneur in a myriad of ways. My initial business concept was focused exclusively on non-invasive Body Sculpting. I became a licensed massage therapist in 2017, a certified Lymphedema therapist in 2019, and later a licensed esthetician. Along the way, I’ve traveled across the globe to enhance my knowledge of age-old modalities. The bathhouse culture is intriguing to me. From bolanotherapy to massage and apothecary. I’m obsessed with it all. I also have a hunger for logistics and supply chain management. These curiosities have carried me to countries like Manila, China, Japan, Morocco, Colombia, Dubai, and more.
As my business grew so did my passion to help others in the World of Wellness. I’ve been fortunate to have grown my business from my living room to two new construction locations to date. An Express location in Washington, DC – Black Bella DC and the full-service luxury Black Bella Spa in Lanham, Maryland. The process of growing the business and building my team has been a series of calculated risks. Supported by a series of mentors. My biggest driver is my family, my team, and my clients.
My team is a stupendous collective of women of color small business owners. Each woman on my team has her own business. This is important to me. I chose to partner with people. Learn with people. Grow & improve with people. I also partner with the local massage and esthetics schools to provide coaching and inspiration. Our new spa home in Lanham, Maryland showcases many treatments I’ve experienced from around the globe. The custom Himalayan Salt Room, the Australian Vichy Shower, 3D Body Scanner, massage and skincare suites. Alongside modern clients’ comforts.
In 2019, I launched the Black Bella Contouring Academy teaching others to launch and scale their spa businesses. With every step of the way, education is a constant theme. Being a local resource for my community is infused with the Black Bella Spa mission. I am proud to offer services like lymphedema treatments, massage, holistic detox, advanced skincare treatments, post-surgery care, and more.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Struggles and challenges are a part of the journey. “Nothing is consistent but change”. Once I learned this to be true it changed my perspective.
I’m grateful to rise each day and take on the challenges. I appreciate being able to demonstrate how to handle issues with grace to my team. My mantra is to “Lead through Love”. This is how I make decisions, how I coach, and how I show up with my clients.
