Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Halley.
Hi Jordan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My chapter into the world of “Content Creation” began fall of 2020, so, around this time last year. Prior to finding my niche of strictly food content, I used to create, comedy/ skits and a bit of social activism, in hopes to determine what my place on Tiktok was. It wasn’t until I had my first viral video which I’ll never forget was Birria Tacos (also one of my favorite Mexican dishes) that made me realize food-TikTok was where I belonged.
It’s so funny in retrospect because that video amassed a mere 140,000 likes I believe and at the time I could have never imagined getting videos with well over 2 million likes and over 8 million views like I do today. Another big aspect of my virality on TikTok stemmed from me incorporating cool and unique recipes while discussing important social issues and more specifically Black issues. I can definitely say when I first began to have consistent virality that I was really on my grind.
I was going to the grocery store 2-4 times a week it felt like, scrambling to come up with new crazy recipes and constantly posting. I also invested in a new phone with tons of storage and some recording gear just to enhance my content. You can even see a shift in quality, angles, and style within my content over the year. Tiktok has opened so many doors and opportunities I never could have imagined a year ago.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Generally speaking, the road has not always been smooth. For sure the good outweighs the bad and negativity, but like with all good things they come at a price. For example, as a content creator who sheds light on Black issues, Black struggles, and social inequality, of course, that came with backlash, hate, and many racial remarks and slander. Not to mention, the hate that came simply just on my cooking content because as we all know with the internet, you cannot satisfy everyone.
Whether it be how I annunciated a word, added too little or too much of an ingredient, or added something some people on the internet didn’t like, they would be sure to mention it in the comments! Another big struggle of mine even today is consistency and motivation. Today, I am 18 years old going on 19 this February but I began TikTok when I was 17. Most people know teens to be huge procrastinators, and like many, I have fallen victim to procrastination and feeling very unmotivated to make content at times.
You burn out, get tired, and feel lazy. Not to mention I was in high school and am now a freshman in college juggling school, work, and content creation. Despite all of these struggles, I continue. I persevere, I maintain strength, and somehow manage to balance it all.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
It wasn’t until about the past month that I began to consider myself as a “creative”, a content creator if you will. Within the past month, I’ve realized that my passion for creating and sharing my food/recipes is a huge artistic aspect of who I am. I’ve always been the same person making the same meals, but now the whole world gets to see, enjoy, and be mesmerized by it. You could say I specialize in the “culinary arts”. I’m self-taught and honestly don’t even call myself a chef. I just enjoy cooking and I am good at it.
I also think I’m good at the digital and visual aspects of creating appealing food for my audience(s). My content as “Jordan Ramsy” is known for showing delicious and eye-pleasing food whilst usually discussing very important social issues, more often than not, the issues discussed are black social issues. I think that’s one of the biggest aspects that sets me apart from other food content creators.
Everyone has a special way of how they create their beautiful art, and mine includes talking about social issues while sharing my recipes. This captures those intrigued by food but also those who understand the importance of the issues I discuss, this is the audience I seek to attract. I feel like I never sit and reflect on how far I have come but I am so insanely proud of my growth and the goals I’ve set for what I hope to become my business.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
This may seem insanely cliché, however, It’s very crucial to never give up. I even have to tell myself this from time to time. Though the reason behind this sentiment is rather self-explanatory, It’s just so very important that you believe in yourself. There will be doubters and those looking to bring you down, and with that, you have to be mentally sound enough to believe in yourself and the content you create.
Another important note is consistency. This separates the amateur’s from the pros, and I still hover on that fine line that is the two from time to time. It’s important to be consistent and engage with the audience you’re trying to create so they never forget who you are.
