Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen El-Haddad.
Hi Jen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I didn’t grow up thinking I would become a wedding and brand photographer. My career actually began in corporate marketing, where I spent years learning strategy, messaging, and how brands truly connect with people. That foundation shaped the way I see storytelling today.
In 2020 and 2021, I experienced layoffs that forced me to reevaluate everything. During that uncertain season, I leaned more deeply into photography, which had always been a creative outlet for me. What started as something I loved quickly became something I could build. In 2021, I stepped into photography full time.
What makes my journey unique is that I did not leave strategy behind. I combined my marketing background with visual storytelling. That blend allows me to approach every wedding and brand session with both creativity and structure. I am not only focused on beautiful imagery, but also on intention, organization, and how those images serve a larger purpose.
I built my business in Charleston, South Carolina, working with couples and entrepreneurs who valued vibrant, meaningful storytelling. In 2025, I relocated back to Baltimore, which felt like both a homecoming and a bold new chapter. That move inspired my rebrand to Jennifer Mary Collective, reflecting the collaborative and elevated experience I provide.
Today, I serve couples and creative entrepreneurs across Baltimore, DC, and Charleston. My work is rooted in capturing the in-between moments, the energy, the emotion, and the details that often go unnoticed. I believe in creating an experience that feels personal, organized, and deeply intentional from start to finish.
At its core, my story is about resilience, reinvention, and choosing alignment. I feel incredibly grateful that I get to document milestones for others while continuing to grow in my own.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. One of the biggest turning points in my journey was being laid off twice within nine months during the pandemic. At the time, photography was still a side business, and stepping into it full-time felt incredibly uncertain. I had spent years building a career in corporate marketing, only to realize how quickly stability can disappear when your future is tied to someone else’s vision for a company. Looking back now, those moments pushed me toward building a life and business that felt more aligned, creative, and fulfilling than anything I could have planned for myself.
Beyond that, entrepreneurship comes with constant growth and reinvention. There have been seasons of burnout, self-doubt, financial stress, and learning how to balance the creative side of the business with actually running it. Relocating from Charleston back to Maryland also challenged me to rebuild community and momentum in a new season of life. But every challenge has shaped the way I serve my clients today. It’s made me more intentional, adaptable, and deeply grounded in creating an experience that feels thoughtful, elevated, and genuinely personal. I truly believe the hardest seasons of my life became the foundation for the most meaningful parts of my career.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m the founder and creative director behind Jennifer Mary Collective, a luxury wedding and brand photographer that also offers content creation for modern couples, entrepreneurs, and creative businesses. I specialize in creating imagery that feels elevated, emotionally honest, and deeply intentional. Whether I’m documenting a wedding weekend or building visual content for a growing brand, my work is rooted in storytelling and creating an experience where people feel fully seen and comfortable in front of the camera.
I’m especially known for blending artistry with strategy. My background in marketing shapes the way I approach every session, allowing me to create visuals that not only feel beautiful, but also meaningful and impactful for my clients. For weddings, that means balancing refined imagery with genuine emotion and connection. For branding clients, it means creating cohesive content that reflects the heart of who they are while helping them confidently show up online.
What I’m most proud of is the community and trust I’ve built through this business. Jennifer Mary Collective was born during one of the most uncertain seasons of my life after being laid off twice during the pandemic, and growing it into a full-time career has been incredibly meaningful. I think what truly sets me apart is the experience I create for my clients. Beyond the final gallery, I want people to feel cared for, celebrated, and genuinely connected throughout the process. I’ve learned that the most meaningful images happen when people feel safe enough to fully be themselves, and creating that environment is something I value deeply.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
One of the things I love most about the Baltimore and DC area is the balance of history, creativity, and individuality. There’s such a strong sense of character here. From the architecture and art scene to the incredible local businesses and wedding venues, the area feels layered with personality and story. I also love how diverse and driven the community is. There are so many entrepreneurs, creatives, and people building meaningful things, which makes it an incredibly inspiring place to run a creative business.
If I had to pick something I like least, I’d probably say the pace and burnout culture that can sometimes come with the area, especially around DC. There’s often pressure to constantly be achieving or moving at full speed, and I think it’s easy for people to lose balance because of that. As someone who works in a very people-centered and creative industry, I’ve learned how important it is to slow down, stay connected to community, and create space for joy and real human connection alongside ambition.
