Today we’d like to introduce you to Haliyah Hales.
Hi Haliyah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my music journey at a very young age. Music has always been part of my life because music found me early. I come from a musical background, with my dad working as a DJ, so I grew up surrounded by sound and rhythm. I sang throughout elementary and high school, but my love for music began even earlier. As a child growing up in Nigeria, I wrote poems and stories and would even sing to the plants in front of our house when i was as little as 8-10 years old. Looking back, I think that’s where my creativity first came alive.
At 16, I officially recorded my first song with Kolly B, and that moment confirmed that music was more than a hobby, it was my calling. My background in nursing taught me the value of compassion and caring for others. Over time, I expanded into music, using my voice and storytelling to connect with people on a deeper level. Since then, I’ve been on a journey of discovering myself, evolving as an artist, and enjoying every step of the process. Every song I create reflects a different chapter of that journey. I have been recognized with awards that celebrate my journey as an artist. In 2024, i won the Canadian Black music award as the Best Afrobeat/Afropop artist in Canada.
As an independent artist, I’ve built my career from the ground up, creating music, Helping the underprivileged girls in the rural area of Nigeria through my Foundation Princess Adebola Arowolo (PAA),organizing events, and staying true to my vision despite challenges. Every experience has shaped me into someone who believes in resilience, authenticity, and purpose. Today, I’m focused on creating meaningful art, inspiring others through my journey, and continuing to grow both personally and professionally. I have had the privilege to perform in different countries from Nigeria, Canada, Benin republic, Greece, United Kingdom sharing my music with diverse audience. i’ve had the opportunity to share the stage with both local and international artists including Adekunle Gold, Ruger, Seyi Shay, Chike and other amazing artists.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like many independent artist, my journey has come with challenges, from navigating the financial demands of building a music career to finding the right guidance and opportunities. As a woman, A black woman in the industry, i’ve had to overcome barriers while staying true to my vision. Balancing my professional career with music has also required discipline and resilience, but every challenge has shaped my growth as an artist

The name is Haliyah Hales, You can call me Haliyah! i specialize in Afrobeat, Afro-Fusion, blending my heritage, my emotions and storytelling into my sound. i’m known for creating music that allows me to pour my heart into every rhythm and connect deeply with my listeners . i’m especially proud of representing my culture by incorporating my language (Yoruba) into my songs and using my platform as an artist to give back through my PAAD(Princess Adebola Arowolo) Foundation, supporting girls through menstrual hygiene initiatives.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Music makes me happy because it is where i found my home. it gives me freedom to express myself and transform my emotions into something meaningful. when life feels heavy, i turn to music; When i’m Joyful, i celebrate through music. Even when i dont have the words, music gives me a melody and makes me feel lighter. Beyond music, i love painting and creating art, i love the ocean and i love helping people in need brings me purpose and fulfillment. Most importantly, i love spending time with God, saying my prayers and meditation. Whether through my art or my work in the community, i find happiness in creating impact and making a difference in people’s lives.
