Check Out Ebony Jackson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Jackson. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Ebony Jackson (Miz Jaxxxn) is an edgy, avant-garde storyteller. As a multi-disciplinary artist, Ebony is able to weave her skills of comedy, dance, music, and theatre into a tapestry of stories that are intended to entertain and challenge paradigms to get a deeper understanding of the dysfunction in our lives. Ebony’s one-woman show, “Single Muva, Man of the House” has been performed throughout the DMV area, with its world premiere being produced at Motor House. As a Ruby Artist Alumna, she is able to translate that show into the film medium. Ebony has performed nationally, including Caroline’s on Broadway, The DC Improv, and The Baltimore Comedy Factory. She was also featured in the 2021 Netflix documentary “Dark City Beneath the Beat,” produced by Color Creative, a company founded by Issa Rae and directed by TT the Artist.

In October 2022, Ebony was part of The Jill Fox Center for Hope art gallery. She donated photography and became a published photographer through their commemorative book. The Center for hope is a facility that supports victims of child abuse and gun violence. The inspiring work of this Lifebridge organization motivates Ebony to bridge philanthropy and entertainment through her future endeavors.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If you are an artist and entrepreneur nothing will be smooth. It’s always an uphill battle because you are deciding to live an alternative lifestyle. I am constantly challenged by my own inner criticism. I am learning ways to silence the noise and make final decisions so that my procrastination doesn’t kill the creative process. Sometimes I take a mental health day and allow my brain to rest before I implement any of my plans.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently focused on producing my one woman show ( Single Mother, Man of the House) into a film. I began filming in 2021 and I expect to complete the project in the next year . It has been a very exciting experience and I can’t wait to show the finished product. I am still performing stand up comedy to keep my storytelling fresh. I believe that Live performance has always kept me sharp. My website is under construction but it will host all of my creativity, including performances and projects.

What were you like growing up?
I was a quiet imaginative child. I loved to dance and listen to the quiet storm radio show as I slept. My love for music came from listening to slow jams. I auditioned for my first talent show in the 5th grade. I didn’t tell my mom. I used my aunt’s Monica tape and sang “Don’t take it personal”. I sang my little heart out, and the guidance counselors were shocked that this little nerdy girl could hold a tune. I skipped all the way back to class. During the rehearsals, the teacher lost my tape, and I had to choose another song. I chose “killing me softly“ by the Fugees. I knew that song like the back of my hand. I wore chunky heeled jelly sandals and a black skirt set from the GALLO clothing store. I still have the picture. The next day after the show a girl in my class said I sounded like a lamb when I sang. I was embarrassed. Do you know what a lamb sounds like? Baaaaaaaaaaa. I didn’t sing for a long time after that moment. No one encouraged me too. I didn’t have much confidence, and I looked for other interests. I always wanted to be a background dancer and started teaching myself how to dance from music videos. I took ballet, tap, and African dance. I was always looking for the next thing when I didn’t get the support I felt I deserved. I was hungry to find that spark that music gave me since I touched the stage.
