Today we’d like to introduce you to Denae Bettis (A.K.A Beautiful Beei.)

Hi Denae, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started practicing makeup at the age of 15. I used to watch YouTubers do their makeup and I would try the looks on myself. In the beginning, I was terrible at makeup and it would make me sad that I couldn’t do the beautiful makeup looks like my favorite YouTubers. Also, at the time I was flat broke because I was only 15. So when I started my first job at Children’s Place, my entire paycheck would go toward makeup. By November of 2016, I had started my own YouTube channel. I would stay on YouTube on and off for about 3 years. My YouTube career wasn’t as successful as I had hope, I did learn some things along the way.

My passion for makeup didn’t stop at YouTube. I started creating makeup looks on Instagram. I was able to gain 1,180 followers.  I am still growing and I one day hope to have 100,000 followers. Also, I have started my own small makeup service. I provide traveling makeup artist services to the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas. I had a rough start with only five clients my first year and then Covid happened. Although, I have been receiving a steady influx of clients. I am so grateful. I hope my journey continues and I never give up.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I struggled with gaining clients at the beginning of my makeup journey. I had to do free makeup for promotion, to get my name out there. Also, it’s really tough knowing that if you have an off day or mess up that your brand can be completely ruined. That’s a lot of pressure, so I always stay on top of my game on and off-camera. Lastly, buying products for my kit is the hardest in my opinion. If a brand changes a formula or discontinues a product, you are pretty much out of luck. Especially if that product was a staple in your kit.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m mostly known for creating makeup looks and videos on Instagram. I have been creating on Instagram since 2018. My most recognized look is my Beautiful Beei’s Signature Soft Glam. This look is requested by almost all my clients. The look is a combination of warm and neutral colors, (burnt orange, neutral brown, and tan), and a cut crease with a beautiful dual pigmented shimmer. Another part of this signature look is the nose highlight, which gives my clients the appearance of a slimmer nose without a harsh contour. This look is natural and enhances my client’s already existing beauty. My greatest achievement is this signature look because it is how I found my makeup style. In the makeup world, a makeup artist’s style is like your fingerprint, no two are alike.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Start where you are and learn along the way. Your clients, fans, and followers will be willing to grow with you. I wish I had started on my makeup artist journey sooner but I was scared people wouldn’t like the way I did makeup but ironically now it’s a trend now. Time waits for no one and you shouldn’t wait either.
