Hi Darienne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I developed a passion for doing hair at a very young age. I grew up rolling my mom’s hair while she was asleep, fascinated by the beauty and creativity behind it. Before I was even tall enough to see over the bathroom counter, I was attempting to curl my own hair. I also loved helping my peers with their hair for dance recitals, performances, and school events. It quickly became clear that hairstyling wasn’t just something I enjoyed—it was something that came naturally to me.
Although I spent years experimenting and practicing, my first opportunity to receive professional training came in high school. After being accepted into the Cosmetology Magnet Program at Western School of Technology and Environmental Science, I completed the program, became eligible to take my state cosmetology exam, and proudly earned my professional license.
To complete my licensure requirements, I gained hands-on salon experience at Xscape Hair Studio. There, I had the privilege of learning from incredibly talented stylists who helped shape not only my technical skills but also my confidence, professionalism, and business mindset. That experience laid a strong foundation for the career I have today.
My journey began as a salon assistant and shampoo technician at Xscape Hair Studio, and through hard work and dedication, I’ve grown into owning and operating my own private salon suite. Today, I have the privilege of managing my own schedule, serving an amazing clientele, and continuing to build a brand that reflects my passion for healthy, beautiful hair. I’m incredibly grateful for where my journey began because every step has shaped me into the stylist and entrepreneur I am today. I truly believe that doing hair is more than a service—it’s an opportunity to help people feel confident, beautiful, and like the very best version of themselves.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Entrepreneurship hasn’t been easy. There were times when I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make rent or maintain a steady flow of clients. But something in me kept telling me not to give up, so I chose to take things one day at a time.
Whenever I had free time, I’d walk through malls, local markets, and even Walmart handing out business cards and introducing myself to potential clients. I also took time perfecting different styles and haircutting techniques so that every new client who sat in my chair would want to come back.
There have been plenty of moments—both then and even now—when I’ve had to remind myself that challenges are a part of every business, big or small. I’ve learned to celebrate my progress, give myself grace, and be proud of everything I’ve been able to accomplish on my own. Taking it one day at a time has made my path smoother, strengthened my resilience, and taught me how to navigate the difficult seasons with confidence.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in healthy hair care and helping my clients achieve long-term hair health. I’m passionate about helping clients maintain and grow healthy natural hair by creating realistic maintenance routines and recommending styles that fit their individual needs and lifestyles.
In today’s world, many people no longer feel comfortable asking the hair care questions they really want to ask, and the internet often promotes a one-size-fits-all approach that simply doesn’t work for everyone. I strive to be that bridge—helping my clients understand their unique hair texture, learn what works best for them, and build routines that fit seamlessly into their everyday lives. My goal is to make hair care feel approachable, empowering, and never intimidating.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
It isn’t lost on me that the salon has always been more than a place to get your hair done. For so many Black women, it has been a safe space—a place of community, connection, and belonging. The simple moments of conversation, laughter, and shared experiences are incredibly meaningful and have always played an important role in building and maintaining our community.
I’m deeply passionate about what I do because I never lose sight of that bigger picture. The little girl in me was loved, seen, encouraged, and helped become the woman I am today within the walls of a Black salon. That experience is something I’ll always cherish, and it’s the same sense of comfort, care, and community I strive to create for every person who sits in my chair.
