Hi Crystal, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Crystal Tseng Portraits is a premium family portrait and headshots studio located in Ellicott City, Maryland. I also offer customized wall gallery designs featuring archival-grade photo prints, premium framed canvas portraits, and heirloom albums—beautiful keepsakes that families can treasure for generations. With over 12 years of experience in photography and design, I am passionate about creating elegant, minimalist artwork that fills homes with warmth and love.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The Biggest Challenge: Learning Business and Marketing
Before becoming a photographer, I was a scientist with no formal business training. I’ve always been a curious learner, but running a business was a whole new adventure! From structuring my business and pricing my services to finding the right clients, every step was a learning experience. It wasn’t always easy, but I’ve always believed that challenges are just opportunities waiting to be explored. One thing I did know—I genuinely love working with people, and I soon realized that building meaningful connections would be the key to my success.

Building a Brand and Finding Clients
At first, I struggled to define my ideal clients in such a competitive industry. I knew I had something unique to offer, but I had to figure out how to make my voice heard. I dedicated time to learning marketing strategies, refining my brand, and embracing the power of word-of-mouth referrals. More than anything, I discovered that when you create an experience that people truly love, they naturally want to share it with others. Genuine relationships became the foundation of my business, and that made all the difference.

Lessons from the Journey
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that success isn’t just about talent—it’s about adaptability, perseverance, and the willingness to keep growing. Every challenge has shaped me into a stronger business owner and a more intentional artist. More importantly, I’ve realized that fulfillment comes from serving others in meaningful ways. Crystal Tseng Portraits isn’t just about taking pictures; it’s about celebrating life, love, and connection. It’s about turning fleeting moments into cherished memories.

And so, my journey continues—one portrait, one story, one moment at a time!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The portraits I create are more than just images—they are joyful expressions of life, connection, and love. I bring a warm, upbeat energy to every session, ensuring that clients feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. Each photograph is thoughtfully composed with a blend of elegance and simplicity, allowing genuine emotions to shine through.

With a focus on soft, natural light and refined details, my work embraces a timeless aesthetic that is both modern and classic. Designed to be cherished for generations, these portraits not only bring beauty into the spaces where they are displayed but also hold deep personal meaning for years to come.

When I first started Crystal Tseng Portraits, I threw myself wholeheartedly into every aspect of my business—photographing, editing, marketing, and client communication. I loved the creative process, but as my business grew, so did my responsibilities. Late nights spent editing, endless emails, and back-to-back sessions left me drained. What once brought me so much joy started to feel overwhelming.

But I’ve always been an optimist, and I knew there had to be a better way! I decided to build a small support team—outsourcing tasks like editing and administrative work while collaborating with stylists and makeup artists to enhance the client experience. This shift not only helped me regain balance but also allowed me to focus on what I love most: capturing beautiful, meaningful moments.

Burnout taught me an invaluable lesson—success isn’t just about working harder but about working smarter. By trusting others and streamlining my process, I’ve been able to sustain my passion and create an even better experience for my clients. Now, I get to show up every day with the same energy and excitement that inspired me to start this journey in the first place!
