Today we’d like to introduce you to Cadeem Lamarr.
Hi Cadeem, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I started making music when I was 16. Before that, my main goal was to become a professional skater or a soccer player. Skating didn’t work out and funnily enough, I quit soccer because I hated team sports. During this time my best friend, Ian, who lived across the street started his studio and was producing for local rappers. Since my afterschool time was unoccupied, I spent my time with him, in his basement, absorbing everything like a sponge. Eventually, my other friend Krystal gave me my first copy of FL Studios.
Skateboarding taught me how powerful music was in creating a good atmosphere, so I wanted to make music so people would want to dance and skate too. At the same time, I ended up with a new group of friends and we all started producing together every day after school. I can’t describe how much fun it was to just have a solid group all working towards the same goal.
Eventually, we realized we wanted to all start DJing to help show our music at school parties, so all six of us ended up sharing a Numark Mixtrack Pro with sliders and buttons missing that our friend Mike found at the Goodwill for 40 bucks. That’s basically how it started and I just haven’t stopped since.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, but I have no complaints. Any day I get to wake up and make art that gets shared with the world is a blessing.
Yes, I have had “setbacks”. However, I truly believe perspective is everything. Every bump in the road has taught me valuable lessons that I would not have learned if it was all smooth sailing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
This question is always challenging for me. A significant aspect of my music, especially the originals, incorporates elements from various genres. The best way I can describe my sound is Deem & Bass. The music has always made me, and you can bet there’s going to be bass. I believe this sets me apart from others because I can’t neatly fit into a box, which is fine with me.
If I had to think of one song I’m proud of, it would be “OK!” featuring Rilla Force. For one, I looked up to Rilla for some time and it’s very surreal when an inspiration becomes a peer. I’m proud of the production because it toes the line between simple and complex. I’ve been adopting a less is more approach to production and vocals and quite frankly, I think I nailed it with that one.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Honestly, the best way people could support me, or any artist, is by sharing the music. Shares, social media engagement, and showing up to shows in your city go a long way.
