Check Out BUCK!’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to BUCK!.

Hi BUCK!, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A Baltimore native, Rodney “BUCK!” Herring, attended Hampton University where he majored in Art. At Hampton, BUCK! found his voice studying great visual artists and writers of the 20th century. After graduation, BUCK! found himself down the parkway from Baltimore, creating art in Washington, DC. A collage of words and impactful imagery, BUCK! describes his work as “an ongoing conversation with myself in regards to my many artistic influences gathered from daily life and also from seeking information. The viewer gets bits of everything in my head in the work including influences from impressionists, cartoonists, painters, graphic artists and more. The art is often interrupted by my logical/rational thoughts which are then reinterpreted back into a visual representation of its chaos.” expressive. The viewer is exposed to a range of influences in my work, including those of impressionists, cartoonists, classical painters, graphic artists, and more. My work emerges from the tension between creative impulse and analytical thought, which are then reinterpreted into a visual representation of their chaos.” A complex, layered collage of words and impactful imagery, BUCK! strives for his work to live in a world of its own.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s never a smooth road, at least as far as I’m concerned. I’ve been fired from a great job, I’ve lost a a business due to the financial crash and my mismangement. . I’ve struggled getting and mainting work. I’ve won and lost and I’m grateful to be able to wake up and do it all over again each morning. I’ve learned so much and I’m learning even more as I go.. I’ve learned that persistence is the key to success.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At this point in my journey, I am a full-time painter, part-time designer, part-time gallerist and an agitator. I specialize in pushing boundaries around thought, philosophy and art and design, in any and all spaces. I walk in the door slowly and then I create change. What sets me apart is I beleive know that change is inevitable. Mbilashaka.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Sitting at my parents kitchen table by myself, going thru a ream of typing paper drawing anything and everything.
