Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashleigh Clyde.
Hi Ashleigh, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
“One of the proudest moments in my journey was receiving a commendation resolution that was passed and voted on by The Virginia House of Delegates. This recognition affirmed the impact of my work and served as a testament to the dedication and commitment I have towards youth advocacy.”
My journey began at an early age when I discovered my passion for public speaking and storytelling. I was captivated by the power of media and its ability to inform, entertain, and inspire. This led me to explore various avenues of communication, including writing, acting, and hosting events in my community.
I was involved in leadership when I became fifth-grade class president at Gravely Elementary School, I then became a Public Relations Officer at Marstellar Middle School, and Speech and Debate Captain and President for two consecutive years at Osbourn Park Senior High. By the age of 16, I started doing entertainment reporting and film criticism, attending red-carpet events, and interviewing celebrities. This early experience allowed me to sharpen my interviewing skills and develop a keen eye for analyzing and reviewing films.
As I continued to pursue my education, I realized that broadcast journalism and law were the perfect fusion of my interests in communication and current affairs. I enrolled at Hollins University on scholarship, where I am currently pursuing a double major in Business (Finance) and Applied Economics. This academic foundation equips me with a strong understanding of finance and economics, which I believe are essential for effective journalism.
Alongside my reporting work, I also dived into the world of podcasting and launched my show, Ashleigh on Air. The podcast became a platform for me to engage in meaningful conversations, share stories, and discuss important topics with experts and thought leaders. It has been a gratifying experience to connect with listeners and offer them valuable insights and perspectives.
Simultaneously, I became increasingly passionate about youth advocacy and using media as a tool to amplify their voices. I delved into research on Youth Participatory Action, Childhood/Schoolhouse Commercialism, and Political Polarization, becoming a contributing author and researcher on multiple publications in the field including “A Handbook of Children and Young People’s Participation: Conversations for Transformational Change” and “Education Action Research: The ‘Impact’ of YPAR: In their own words” to name a few. These academic journals have provided a platform for me to share insights and contribute to the discourse on youth participatory action research.
My dedication to youth advocacy led me to co-found the Adventure Prayer Journal: For Kids with my twin sister Kristine A. Clyde and my mother Broma Clyde, a project that combines my faith and passion for empowering young minds. This initiative has allowed me to make a positive impact on children’s spiritual development and connect with families on a deeper level.
Throughout my journey, I have also had the privilege of hosting various events and galas, as well as participating in high-profile panels. These experiences have further honed my public speaking skills and allowed me to connect with diverse audiences.
Furthermore, my efforts have gained recognition in various media outlets such as Prince William Living, Potomac Local, Artistic Fuel, PWCS News, and INSIDE NOVA. These platforms have allowed me to reach wider audiences and amplify the voices of the young people I advocate for.
One of the proudest moments in my journey was receiving a commendation resolution that was passed and voted on by The Virginia House of Delegates. This recognition affirmed the impact of my work and served as a testament to the dedication and commitment I have toward youth advocacy.
Looking ahead, my goal is to become a news anchor for Fox 5 DC, where I can utilize my skills and knowledge to deliver accurate, engaging, and impactful news stories. I am driven by a desire to shed light on important issues, challenge the status quo, and make a difference in the world through my work.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being only 19 years old to date, the road has not always been a cruise. Upon balancing the normal life of a teenager with staying academically successful and maintaining my leadership responsibilities, I have faced my fair share of challenges and obstacles.
One of the significant challenges I encountered was managing my time effectively. Juggling academic pursuits, extracurricular activities, and professional commitments required careful planning and prioritization. It was essential for me to develop strong organizational skills and establish a disciplined routine to ensure I could excel in all aspects of my life.
Another obstacle I faced was navigating the competitive nature of the media industry. Breaking into the field of broadcast journalism at a young age required persistence and determination. I had to work hard to prove myself, constantly honing my skills and seeking out opportunities to gain practical experience. Overcoming self-doubt and building confidence were crucial steps in my journey.
Moreover, I faced the challenge of advocating for youth voices in a society that sometimes overlooks or dismisses their perspectives. I encountered resistance and skepticism from certain individuals who questioned the credibility and validity of my work. However, I remained steadfast in my commitment to empowering young people and persevered through these obstacles, using them as fuel to drive my passion further.
In addition, financial constraints posed a hurdle along the way. Pursuing higher education and engaging in various projects required resources and support. I sought out scholarships, grants, and part-time work opportunities to ensure I could continue my studies and pursue my aspirations while managing financial responsibilities.
Despite these challenges, I firmly believe that obstacles are growth opportunities. Each hurdle I faced has contributed to my personal and professional development, teaching me resilience, adaptability, and determination. They have reinforced my commitment to making a positive impact and have fueled my drive to overcome any obstacles that come my way.
Through perseverance, support from mentors and loved ones, and an unwavering belief in my mission, I have been able to navigate these challenges and continue progressing on my path. I am grateful for the lessons learned along the way, as they have shaped me into the resilient and tenacious individual I am today.
But hey! Faith without works is dead.
