Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Jones (JonesShorty).
Anthony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My passion for music production started in high school through my cousin, who was studying music production and would sometimes bring equipment home. He introduced me to the software and gave me my first real opportunity to explore creating music.
I have always been interested in the music industry. I would watch music videos on BET and feel inspired by the artists I saw, imagining myself creating music of my own. That inspiration pushed me to spend countless hours in the studio working on beats, developing my sound, and learning the creative side of music production.
I was also willing to take every opportunity to collaborate with other artists, even when it meant traveling to different areas. Through those experiences, I was able to connect and work with local artists throughout the DMV, Baltimore, and Philadelphia areas. Those collaborations helped me grow as a producer, expand my network, and gain a deeper understanding of the music industry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey in music production has not been a smooth one. One of my biggest challenges has always been financial. There were many times when I wanted to invest in better software or equipment but simply did not have the money to do so. I had to learn how to be creative with the resources I had and continue developing my skills despite those limitations.
Another difficult part of my journey has been learning how business can affect personal relationships. I have lost friendships because business ventures did not work out the way we expected. Those experiences were painful, but they taught me important lessons about communication, trust, expectations, and the reality of trying to build something with other people.
Despite these challenges, I never lost my passion for music. The obstacles forced me to become more resourceful, patient, and determined. Every setback has given me another reason to keep learning, creating, and pursuing opportunities to work with other artists. My journey has not been easy, but the struggles have become an important part of who I am as a producer and as someone trying to build a career in the music industry.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Inside my creative workflow, every track moves through two main stages. First, I use Reason to build and arrange virtual and live instrumentation for my own projects and collaborative clients. Next, I shift to Pro Tools for precise vocal recording and mixing. Everything is tracked at my studio, The Headquarters, using industry-standard gear. Engineering and production established my baseline in the music industry, but stepping in front of the mic over the last three years has opened an exciting new chapter and the audience response has exceeded every expectation.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
There’s so much I love about Baltimore especially how the city is finally stepping up to champion its local creative talent and uplift its hip-hop artists. When I first started out, that kind of support was hard to come by. And, of course, you can’t talk about Baltimore without mentioning the seafood! On the flip side, what frustrates me most is seeing a lack of basic hospitality and community care in certain neighborhoods where people should be looking out for one another.
