Check Out Amirah Capers’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amirah Capers.

Hi Amirah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been expressing myself artistically for as long as I can remember. It was when I was 11 that I began to learn how to use art as an outlet. Dance, photography, poetry, and music are my most favorable means of expression. I have always gone to art-based schools; it wasn’t unheard of for students to spend a lot of time in the studios. Personally, it became a home for me. My teachers saw this and worked with me to help hone my skills and grow as an artist. They cared, and I don’t think I’ll ever forget. In high school, I began a photography business and got more involved in the industry. While doing this, I noticed a need for releasing the fundamentals and encouraging creativity. I also recognized similar to many other industries, people of color and their work go overlooked. I then came up with the idea that would later become Meraki. I wanted to create a place to promote and grow creatives. Provide them a platform to exhibit their work, guidance to improve, and protection from business situations that target and exploit artists. Meraki is doing something with soul, love, and creativity. I found it beyond fitting.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would not say it has been a smooth road, but nothing worth it ever is. I also feel like this is only the beginning. The struggle that I find myself in frequently is more mental. As an entrepreneur, I struggle to stay consistent on days when I second-guess myself and what I’m doing. We are human things happen. However, getting through those days and not letting them hinder your business is what matters. While my business is still growing, and adjustments are still being made: I don’t see this as a struggle. Everyone must start somewhere; change is inevitable.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My artist’s name is Princess. I wanted to have a name that’s still my own. My name is Arabic; I decided to go by its English definition in these situations. While I have been invested in Photography mainly these last few years, it is only the beginning. I am thankful for my awards and recognition. Lately, I have been exploring poetry and songwriting. I always felt music speaks to me in ways I can’t explain. More recently, I wrote a piece for a commercial and helped to finish a song for a fellow artist. Meraki is truly more than a brand; it genuinely is a lifestyle. One that I subscribe to and that I believe sets me aside. I am undoubtedly motivated by what makes me happy. Art allows me to put a piece of myself into everything I do.

What do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is knowing that I am safe to be myself. Not only for me but for those I adore too. I love creating non-judgmental environments where people can let their inner child flourish. It truly unlocks a different side of people and deepens your connection. I can genuinely say that some of my most memorable and enjoyable moments have been during times like that.
