Today we’d like to introduce you to Aisha Springer.
Hi Aisha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m the creator of the Urban Escapist blog. I’ve always been drawn to diverse people, cultures, languages, and places, as well as writing. I have also dealt with anxiety and depression since childhood when I suffered from a social anxiety disorder called selective mutism. When I began to take steps to proactively manage my anxiety and depression, I found that my passion for travel, culture and writing remained a source of happiness and supported my mental and emotional health. With mental health being a struggle for so many, I decided to share my story with others.
I established my travel and wellness blog, Urban Escapist, in 2017 to encourage self-care through travel and local exploration. My platform reflects three themes that are important to me: a sense of freedom and exploration, self-care and mental wellness, and cultural appreciation. My goal is to inspire my audience to explore new places, even if they can’t travel far, and to incorporate intentional self-care into their lives by prioritizing travel.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Creating, maintaining, and growing a blog and handling all the social media and marketing on your own is no easy task. I have had many challenges along the way and continue to struggle in some ways, but I keep going because I enjoy it. Consistently creating new content is a never-ending struggle since I have a full-time day job and there are only so many hours in the day. And that full-time job is at a nonprofit organization, so my salary is not enough to support constant international travel. Not to mention a limited amount of vacation leave. Still, I make it work by staying creative and making the most of what I do have, something I also encourage my audience to do. Can’t travel internationally because of the pandemic but need to get out of the house to feel better? Find some interesting new places within driving distance or take a road trip for the weekend. My blog speaks to these people, not the luxury traveler, because the vast majority of us experience these same challenges.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my day job, I work as a Fundraising and Marketing professional for a local nonprofit organization and I have ten years of experience in this field. But my passion project is my blog, Urban Escapist. I specialize in speaking to “regular” people who don’t travel for a living, aren’t digital nomads, and aren’t swimming in money and vacation time, but still want to prioritize travel because of its mental and emotional health benefits. As the importance of mental health gains wider recognition, many of us are seeing that travel and wellness are inextricably linked. I aim to expand the definition of travel beyond exotic, far-away destinations like Bora Bora or Cairo. Those places are amazing, but a big part of travel is discovering new places, new cultures, and new experiences–and that can happen even in your own backyard. I’m most proud of the fact that I provide resources and tips and open up new possibilities for the everyday person who loves travel but has to put in a bit more effort to make it fit into their lives.
What does success mean to you?
I believe each of us defines our own measure of success. True success is holistic, meaning it satisfies our individual needs and wants as complex, unique human beings with multiple aspects to our personalities. Achieving success doesn’t signify an ending, but instead the knowledge that you have and will continue to give it your all, celebrate the small victories along the way, and make a positive impact on the lives of those around you.
