Carlos Beauford on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Carlos Beauford. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Carlos, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Getting dressed, heading to work, but I always get there early, sit in my office, that way I can decompress and mentally prepare for the day and intentionally decide how I want my day to start and progress.

As much as possible, I try not to talk to anyone about anything pressing in the morning because I’m still loading, so to speak, lol. Unless it’s absolutely necessary, please don’t call me before 10 AM, LOL.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Carlos Beauford. Professionally, I go by Black Los.

I am a recording artist, BMI registered songwriter, poet, occasional producer. I’m involved in many things from an artistic standpoint, even album art, photography and cinematography.

I consider myself to be a common everyman who loves music, and was motivated to create for the sake of creating. I would be lying to say that I imagined being some big rap star, because, honestly, I thought recording music was an unattainable thing, that is, until I met and befriended my man Damien, shoutout to KNOC List crew. I learned that with a simple dynamic microphone, my PC and a decent DAW, I could get my sound out.

As time went on, I wanted my sound to improve sonically, and I would meet people and build relationships that would assist in doing so. I also credit my big homie Dwight Giles, professionally known as Lyriqs, who put me on recording for commercial consumption. I didn’t think it was an accessible thing, but he not only helped me there, I recorded my debut feature length album, Silent King To A Vacant Throne, at his studio, be sure to check that out.

My story is unique, yet not unlike most. I’m from the same environment, subject to the same things most black urban youth are typically, but my experience is all my own, and I feel it’s reflected in my music.

Currently, I am finishing the recording of my follow-up album, “Not For Nothing,” which should drop the end of 2025/ beginning of 2026.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
A very shy, introverted, often misunderstood neurodivergent child. I enjoyed spending time with my cousins on the weekends and during the summer, but I always felt like the oddball, even among my peers in and outside of school growing up. I felt like there was just something about me that had me feeling inadequate or not fitting in. My friend groups were usually small.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
That I can’t be hurt more than I have already. Sometimes success seems unreal or undeserved. I wish I could divulge as deep as I’d like to, but some things we keep to ourselves, respectfully, I hope you don’t mind me saying so.

Suffering is also a decision and a response.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is a construct. For business purposes.

That isn’t meant to sound disingenuous or anything, but even at work, it earns a living, so I become more outspoken, jovial and bright. It’s very few people who know the REAL me, and some are no longer around.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I just hope it’s one of truth, redemption, and understanding. I don’t expect everyone to understand me, but hopefully when it’s all said and done, it’ll all make sense. As what was once said by DJ Jazzy Jeff, “I want to die empty.” I want to be able to tell it all, and be satisfied with it.
