Ashley Ingraham Watts of Towson on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Ashley Ingraham Watts. Check out our conversation below.

Ashley, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
My job is very personal, home organization clients are inviting me into their homes and showing me their pain points, moving clients are bringing me in for a very stressful time and estate clearing clients are grieving. I work to handle everyone’s emotions and needs carefully. For the range of clients I’ve had and the variety of houses I’ve been in what is universal is everyone wants to create a home for themselves and their family. Whether it’s a bachelor or a family with young children there is a common want to create a relaxing and calming space for themselves at the end of their day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I began my business nearly 10 years ago in the hopes of being able to share my innate skill with others to help them to feel less stressed. Every aspect of my business I have had to do for myself. I appreciate how overwhelming clutter, moving or clearing the home of a loved one can be. I love being able to alleviate people’s stress and make their homes better. Working to donate, consign and auction the items that clients no longer need or have in excess makes it all the easier to part with as they know these items won’t be sitting in a landfill but getting a second life.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I was fortunate to go to a school where the teachers really saw me. They fostered a strong self of confidence and encouraged all of us to speak up and be heard. I was so lucky to have that education background.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Covid and the shutdown of spring 2020 was a really stressful time for everyone. The whole model of my business is to go into people’s homes, to work up close and personal with people and be in their spaces. That couldn’t happen. I worked really hard on the back end of my business, working on content, the website and began hosting online Organization seminars. It really helped to lay the groundwork so that when people felt comfortable with someone coming back into their homes I was booked and busy. I am very aware that a lot of small businesses didn’t survive that time period and remain grateful that although it was stressful I was able to come out on the other side.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Home Organization has seen a huge uptick in popularity in the past decade, which is really fortunate timing for me and my business. There are so many influencers and shows showcasing beautiful perfect color-coded pantries and homes with glass containers and expensive bins and baskets. Organization doesn’t have to cost you a small fortune, creating a system for a client is really based on how they live and what their daily schedule and budget looks like. People shouldn’t be intimidated to get themselves organized and place pressure on for a perfect home, they just need systems that work for themselves and their families. Organization alleviates stress and helps all our hectic lives to run more smoothly, but it doesn’t have to cost you a small fortune.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I really love my job. Even on the hardest and most exhausting days I enjoy the thousands of “afters” that I get to provide. Hearing from clients about how pleased they are with the outcome or how less stressed they feel now truly makes my day. I don’t ever take it for granted that I was able to create my ideal business and a decade later continue to be in business.
