An Inspired Chat with Tangi Singleton of Parkville

We recently had the chance to connect with Tangi Singleton and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Tangi, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I would say that family brings me great joy however my grandson, I call him my little Snapping Turla, Chunk, Yami, brings me the most joy and happiness. Knowing that my family can come to me for anything warms my heart. Family is what makes my world go around especially all of the children in the family. Whether I’m being called Gi-Gi, Auntie, Momma, Ma etc it warms my heart and brings a big smile to my face.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an all around big hearted person who loves serving others. I am an everyday student who loves to learn new things but, I am also a teacher. I have a passion for cooking, travel, history, arts and crafts and self care. I believe in the power of connection and community which is why Destined for Greatness was birthed. It was birthed when I noticed that many things I had growing up as a kid were slowly disappearing, some even becoming completely obsolete. As a mother of two, I wanted to give my children something to do with their friends. My house was always the spot for all the neighborhood children and my children’s friends; truthfully, it still is. My passion for mentoring children came from these everyday interactions with the children and listening to what it was that they wanted and needed. From there, I made it my mission to work with youth and the community with every fiber of my being.

I am a Director and Lead Mentor for Destined for Greatness Mentoring and Outreach. My specialty has always been working with youth and community outreach. My love for community outreach and youth deepened when I worked for the health department doing case management for new mothers, mothers, and young children. At this point, I started to further educate myself on nonprofit organizations, community outreach, and more. I’ve always had a background in the medical field and social work field. Even my teenage summer job was working with CPS and social services. I started working as a unique education one-to-one and teacher assistant for the state at an alternative school that serviced several Maryland counties. Once there, everyone said I had a sparkle in my eye, and I truly believe my love for children deepened even more. From planning group activities, lesson plans, classroom delegation, and decoration, I knew my calling was to serve the children. So my specialty, in my opinion, is mentoring and nurturing youth, giving back to the community, event planning, and so much more. I am known for being that outgoing go-getter with a big heart. I love being of service to people of all ages, especially children and senior citizens. I am most proud of my steps, accomplishments thus far, and the name I have created for myself among my peers in business. Something that sets me apart from others is MY HEART. I have a big heart and love giving and helping people. That’s my happiness and my purpose. I do anything for the next person, and seeing them happy is my reward.

It is my belief that we are all here to help someone and make a difference in our communities. Usually children and seniors suffer the most and that’s where I feel my lane flows freely. Whether it’s a call late at night to help a new mom or early morning to assist a senior, I feel that it is my divine purpose to help the often forgotten population, no matter what day or time it is. Overall , I feel my purpose is to be a missionary and serve others without limits. By doing that, it brings me great joy , happiness and peace within my heart which supersedes anything money can buy.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
The people who taught me the most about work were my parents. My Dad has always been a business man and instilled in me the importance and ethics of being a successful entrepreneur. My Mom has always loved children and has passed that on to me. She was a teacher and tutor for children of all ages and always had open arms for children. By watching her example and pour love into so many, I knew that she was setting the bar high for me. My parents, godparents and great- grand parents have always taught me to reach for the stars however I believe in reaching for the heavens. They taught me that hard work pays off and it isn’t always monetary. They said if you can be proud of what you have done and made a difference in just one person than you have achieved millions. I try to live by that and practice it in all of my work and businesses always.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If l had to say anything to my younger self it would be more than just one thing.
I would say to myself, Tangi you got this. Stop limiting yourself, give yourself grace, there is no such thing as failure because everything is a lesson, you are more powerful than you realize, even when you don’t think you are capable of anything, that’s when you use that to motivate yourself to continue to keep going and never give up and as always you are truly Destined for Greatness. The world needs you just as you are so never change to fit in because you were made to Stand Out.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that family, loyalty, integrity , dedication, kindness, and authenticity matters the most to me. I feel they would say that because these are characteristics that I believe firmly in no matter what and really don’t have a lot of wiggle room to be lax about.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I would hope people would tell the story about how much of a go getter I was, how I loved to help people, how I love to make others laugh and feel good about themselves or whatever they were facing and that if I could save the world I would. I hope they would tell the fun stories about love and laughter , dancing and singing til our hearts were happy and cheeks were hurting from smiling.
