Margaret P. Bean shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Margaret P., thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Life feels nonstop lately, with work beginning at 4 a.m. and hardly any time to pause. It’s an exhilarating time, with recent travels to Paris to teach remarkable creative arts students, followed by teaching engagements back in Baltimore and meeting amazing people along the way. An assistant would be invaluable because I’m feeling blessed, booked, and busy!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Margaret P. Bean is a talented multi-published author, director, and playwright of MPB Entertainment. Since 2016, she has been passionately creating plays that focus on mental health care awareness and domestic violence, offering diverse individuals the chance to perform and share meaningful stories. As a community leader, licensed Minister (2004), and Ordained Pastor (2007), she founded “Strengthen Thy Sister,” a women’s ministry inspired by Luke 23:32, to uplift others. During the pandemic, she launched a book publishing company. Margaret also created an oil-based perfume called “Boss Lady Sensual & Sassy Amber for the ladies and the exclusive Gentlemen Only”, oil-based scents last all day. Her numerous awards and accolades include the Lifetime Achievement Award for purposeful living, the Elite Businesswoman of the Year 2025, and the Speak Life Award 2025. Margaret continues to empower and support local talent through her impactful theatrical productions.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Despite early challenges like dyslexia, being held back in school, dropping out of high school at 16, and becoming a teenage mother at 18, I managed to overcome the odds. Though I struggled with transposing numbers due to dyslexia and doubted my abilities, I scored the highest in math on my GED exam and passed on the first attempt. I had the chance to work at a law firm where the office manager, Ms. Donna, and Mr. Morris Cohen, Esq., believed in me. Their patience, guidance, and wisdom helped build my confidence and determination. Mr. Cohen even sponsored me to attend Adelphi University. However, after having a second child, I had to pause my dream of becoming a paralegal and eventually a lawyer. Years later, I returned to college and, with a 3.20 GPA, graduated with honors – Summa Cum Laude and as a member of the National Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Lambda. My motto: “She Believed She Could and so She Did,” and that “She” is me!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I’ve faced plenty of struggles in life. I remember when there was no food in the fridge, and as a teenage mother with two beautiful babies, I had to figure out how to feed and clothe them during one of the coldest winters with the deepest snow. I realized early on that life can be hard, and I had to grow up quickly. There was no grace for figuring things out, no one who wanted to understand my journey or deal with any negativity, even though it was my daily reality. I learned to face challenges alone, to dig deep within myself, and to look to the sky, believing that God heard my heart’s cry and captured my tears. With time and unyielding faith, I rose from my lowest points, waking up early, hustling, grinding late into the night to put food on the table, and dreaming of making my parents proud. Sadly, they passed before they could see the adult I’ve become, but I’m evolving every day, finding grace, and striving to make my children proud of me and my accomplishments. Every day, I wake up with determination and resilience, telling myself, “Let’s go again today; there’s work to do.” I can’t give up because God wraps me in His love, reminding me, “You’re safe and okay, baby girl. I got you!”
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I was recently honored with nominations for two Honorary Doctorate Degrees, thanks to the heartfelt recommendations of my closest friends, whom I consider my God-given family. These nominations reflect what truly matters to me: living in Faith, practicing kindness, integrity, resilience, and a strong dedication to the community. Above all, I value being a spirit-led, caring, and humble leader, empowering others, overcoming challenges, and serving as a positive role model and mentor. My guiding belief is that there is no greater privilege than serving God and His people.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am evolving every day into a greater purpose, with each day bringing new challenges and opportunities. I’ve come to realize that following what you were born to do means connecting deeply with your purpose, passion, and maybe even destiny. It’s often chaotic, unpredictable, and rebellious. On the other hand, doing what you’re told might feel safer and more structured, but it can sometimes lack meaning.
