An Inspired Chat with Kiamonique Martin of Baltimore

Kiamonique Martin shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Kiamonique, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Yes! I am walking a path with intention. God is the ruler and Director of my life. I’ve learned to lean on Him in every aspect of my life. He guides me daily, and I position myself to hear His directions. I understand that I have different paths (family, ministry, work, etc.) to take, but it’s all a process to become better internally and externally with one objective; to bless others that will bring glory to His Name.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Baltimore native who loves to create and bring light to dark situations. I am a mother, sister, daughter, aunt, and loyal friend. In my day to day life, I manage a full-time job with the Board of Education with Baltimore City Public Schools and run a loving, peaceful, yet slightly structured home with two teenage boys who I adore. I take pride in raising sons who are learning the importance of leadership, integrity and character.

In addition to my day to day life, I enjoy artistic expression through poetry. I am “The Storyteller.” I enjoy going to poetry events, and getting on the mic at Open Mic events. I had the pleasure of winning first place in a poetry slam competition with my piece, “Let Her Speak!” This poem speaks to the little girl trapped inside of me. She wants to be set free!

I am currently in the “lab” brainstorming and preparing for the grand release of Behind Closed Doors (BCD). I am the creator, director, and producer of this uniquely designed production. Established April 2016, BCD is an “eye opening” experience that will trigger you to self-reflect, and thirst to evolve into wholeness. BCD is designed to give survivors from all walks of life the platform to shar their nonfictional BCD story. BCD is unique and set apart because of its authenticity. People often ask, “Are the people in your productions actors?” No, they are real people, with real stories. No one can tell your story better than you. The people captivate the audience and take them on a journey where they feel like they are with them as they express their story.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My grandmother, the late, Ida B Martin was a great teacher. A teacher who led by example. She instilled in me a great work ethic. A work ethic to be professional, on time, to work hard, and to know that my gifts would make room for me.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be…”Kiamonique, everything works together, so keep pressing forward!”

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am committed to Behind Closed Doors (BCD) no matter how long it takes because I understand that BCD is bigger than me. It’s for God’s glory, salvation, healing, and restoration. BCD is bigger than a project, it’s ministry. BCD will be ten years old in 2026. No matter how many long nights are ahead, I will take God’s led in creating a life changing experience for all who attend the Behind Closed Doors Experience. It takes months of planning and preparation, but again, no matter how long it takes, I will see it through to completion.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
This may sound silly, but what I understand deeply that most people don’t is the importance of celebrating yourself, especially for your birthday. I know too many people who never celebrate themselves specifically for their birthday. For me, it’s not a reminder that I am getting older. It is not a reminder of what I did not accomplish. It’s a reminder that I am still blessed and needed in this crazy world. I see multiple reasons to celebrate, while some do not see the point in it at all. As a two-time cancer survivor, childhood trauma survivor, and survivor of domestic violence, I appreciate life. I do not take life for granted. I celebrate my birthday for the entire month!
