We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jay Svn. Check out our conversation below.
Jay , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I’m driven by a desire to leave a lasting legacy for my family. Growing up in a broken home, I know firsthand the struggles that come with that reality. My mission is to change that story—for me and my children. I want to provide them with the kind of opportunities and knowledge I never had at their age, so they can pass it on to their children and friends, creating a ripple effect of growth and hope. That’s how I believe you pave a true legacy, and it’s what fuels my passion every day over the past few years.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jay Svn, and I’m an entrepreneur and hip hop artist with a vision. I run a clothing brand called Blak Kami, which stands for “Black God.” To me, this symbolizes our power and self-determination—reminding us that we are the creators of our own destinies. I believe in forging my own path, setting my own standards rather than conforming to others’ expectations.
At Blak Kami, we celebrate individuality and the freedom to define ourselves. We draw inspiration from anime, a universal medium that unites people across races and backgrounds. Our mantra is “Make Your Own Rules”—choosing what’s right for us and our families rather than society’s mold.
Growing up in Baltimore was tough, but it fueled my drive to succeed. Inspired by Nipsey Hussle, I realized the importance of diversifying income streams. Launching a clothing line was the first step because fashion is always in demand. It’s been a challenging journey, but I believe persistence will pay off in the long run.
Beyond fashion, I’m passionate about music. I’m currently honing my craft at Pendulum Ink, led by none other than hip hop artist Mickey Factz. Keep an eye out—big things are on the way!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I’m still confidently who I always believed I was. The world hasn’t had the chance to define me, because my parents planted seeds of self-assurance early on. I’ve carved my own path, keeping that confidence alive. I remain the curious soul I’ve always been, eager to explore every corner of this existence. Knowing we only get one shot at life, I’m determined to make every moment count and embrace the journey no matter what comes with it
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
This year has been quite challenging, but I remain committed and resilient. I recognize that I cannot afford to give up, especially since I have children who look up to me. It’s important for me to demonstrate how to face adversity with determination and to lead by example so they can do the same thing for the generations after them
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Any version I present is genuine. I don’t play roles or pretend—what you see is what you get. I’m straightforward, honest, and stand by my word. I have integrity, and I don’t compromise it for anyone.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
It’s clear to me that we only get to live this life once. I think many people don’t consider this, which is why they live the way they do. I believe a lot of people are unaware of how precious life is and should cherish it more. Some people let themselves be held back and don’t even realize they’re their own biggest obstacle sometimes. Some times we have to get out of our own way in order to see the right path ahead.
