We recently had the chance to connect with J Keels and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning J, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
My day starts at 1:30am. I work a full time job at Amazon from 4:30am – 3:00pm Sunday – Wednesday and pickup overtime shifts on Thursdays and Fridays. The rest of my day is split between school, working on my music career, and family.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! My name is Jerrell. My producer name is J Keels. I’ve been working on music for 15 years now. My brand is JKeelsProductions. The main center of my brand is music production. Within the last 2 years I have included mix engineering, and gaming to the brand. What makes my brand and music unique is my sound/style. My music/sound is not limited to one specific genre. It is created based upon how the music speaks to me doing the creative process. I feel the tracks I create will be found by the right artists and audience that they are intended for.
Currently I am working on a few instrumental albums and possibly a few sound packs for other producers.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My grandfather taught me the value of hard work. As a kid I watched him work long hours, sometimes he was only home long enough to eat dinner with the family and then he was off back to work. I work similar to that most of my life.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. There have been a few times in my life where I felt like giving up. It was mainly due to outside influences and internal feelings. I let the negative thoughts of feeling like I was a failure and not good enough to become successful be a burden instead of using it as a source of motivation.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes! I don’t believe in having a false/fake personality/persona out in public. I’m naturally an introvert and quiet around people I don’t know. When I’m around my family and friends I laugh and make jokes.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I had a big heart and that I worked hard at whatever I focused my mind on. I hope they let everyone know I didn’t work and build a legacy for me, that I did it for everyone I loved.
