We recently had the chance to connect with Colada Pen and have shared our conversation below.
Colada, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My son is bringing me joy lately. He has been doing well in school and has made regional on his track team and I am very proud of him.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Colada Pen. I am currently a vocalist in an alternative hip hop band called EgoDef. We are composed of six members–bass, guitar, drum, saxophone and two vocalists. We all started as friends and had a major breakup for about 3 years and recently got back together. We have a show coming up at the Metro Gallery on October 23rd.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I believe the part of me that served its purpose and must now be released is the want or need to be liked. As long as I like myself, I am ok. It took me a very long time to learn that.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes there were plenty of times that I almost gave up. To be completely honest, I had a very rough past 2 years and seriously considered leaving the pursuit of my dreams alone. Every time I consider it though, a major celebrity always reaches out to me to give words of encouragement.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
I know that prayer works. God is real and He has given us all spiritual gifts that never steer us wrong if we tune in and listen.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I am gone, I’d hope people shared and were inspired by my bravery, my ability to love, and my kindness.
