We’re looking forward to introducing you to Alicia Wiley. Check out our conversation below.
Alicia, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, I am loving crossword puzzles, games, and word searches. I felt myself leaning into non-digital forms of entertainment because running a photography business requires so much screen time on phones, cameras, and computers.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey, I’m Alicia, a wedding and portrait photography studio here in Baltimore. I’m going into my 12th year of business, and I still cannot imagine a more perfect job celebrating love and life! One of the things I love most about photography is capturing celebrations and community. I spent the last few years pivoting to primarily wedding photography so I can dedicate more time to my personal life with family and friends.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Have you ever heard the saying “silence creates a negative narrative”? I believe that assumptions break bonds and communication restores them.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
As a hyperindependent perfectionist, it took me years to learn to ask for help and seek support from people who have my best interests. I have always been a patient person and, for years, a people pleaser, which I do believe has led to success. But the most powerful things I have learned from struggling/suffering are discernment and discipline.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Taking photos. LOL. But seriously most know my love for cooking, travel, design, decor, and family time.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
What I work towards every day is building a life for my disabled daughter to be okay after we are gone. This is more than just goals for both of my daughters, it’s a necessity, and I pour my heart into creating a life where they are safe, loved, and well taken care of.
