Abdur-Rahman Quadri of Baltimore on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Abdur-Rahman Quadri shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Abdur-Rahman, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Hiking!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Abdur, the photographer behind ABDURVISUALS. I make clean, honest images of real people—portraits, events, and brand stories. My style is simple: natural light when it’s right, direction that feels easy, and edits that keep skin tones true. Clients say I’m calm on set and organized, but I’m big on catching those in-between moments that actually feel like you.

I’m based in Baltimore and shoot across the DMV. Alongside client work, I run a monthly community project called Selfless Saturday, offering free portraits to folks who need them—because pictures should be for everyone.

What makes my work different? An eye for detail, thoughtful color, and a process that keeps you comfortable from inquiry to delivery. Right now I’m booking headshots, brand campaigns, and milestone events, and building a portrait series on local entrepreneurs.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who to be, I was an introvert—quiet, observant, happiest behind the lens. Now I’m growing into an ambivert: still reflective, but more open, present, and willing to step into the room, start the conversation, and tell the story out loud.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. My first event nearly broke me.

I’d only shot portraits up to that point—about three months into photography—when I took on an event. I worked hard, stayed late, delivered everything I had…and the client still wasn’t happy. It crushed me. I honestly considered quitting.

But that moment taught me the biggest lesson of my career: communicate expectations upfront. Now I’m clear about what I can and can’t deliver, we align on a shot list, timeline, and style before I pick up the camera, and I confirm deliverables in writing. That experience hurt—but it gave me the process I rely on today.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. What you see online is me. Same guy you’ll meet on set—calm, prepared, and hyping you up when you need it. I do keep some things off the feed—family, 2 a.m. edits, the boring business stuff—but the way I treat people and the way I work doesn’t change.

My captions, my colors, my voice—that’s how I actually talk and think. Selfless Saturday isn’t a marketing play; it’s how I give back. So yeah, it’s curated, but it’s not a character. If we met tomorrow, you’d get the exact same energy.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I want folks to say I used my camera—and my time—to make people feel good about themselves and their stories. That every frame I shot, whether for a client job or my monthly Selfless Saturday project, came from a place of genuine care and craft. That I showed up prepared, kept things calm, and left everyone smiling at the final gallery. If the takeaway is “He always delivered amazing pictures and treated people even better,” that’s enough for me.
