Rising Stars: Meet Teashya Tucker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teashya Tucker.

Teashya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I used to think my story was singular, but in my adult life I’ve come to realize that my journey is very similar to a lot of other girls with melanin rich skin. Growing up in the early 1990s, I suffered from low self-esteem as a young girl, largely due to my complexion. I was raised by a single mom who observed the way I shyly and sadly navigated childhood, expressing myself only through sketches and drawings. We discovered I had a talent for art very early on. At age nine, I was enrolled into dance classes to become more social and quickly discovered raw talent. Despite my own battles with self-acceptance, I was lovingly nicknamed “Lil Chocolate” & was constantly encouraged to embrace who I was, despite mainstream media’s reinforcement of beauty. I danced all styles from age 9-22, being accepted to some of the country’s premier ballet schools along the way. I joined the band as a dancer while attending Delaware State University and found myself reaching into my makeup case outside of performances more and more.

Soon, I was doing makeup for my entire dance team and classmates before big events. In the summer of 2012 between my junior & senior years, I landed a job at Sephora and began to formally train as a beauty expert. I graduated college & left Sephora in 2014 to become a manager at the MAC store at Towson Town Center in 2016. “Lil Chocolate” slowly morphed into “Chocolate Makeup”, which transformed into COCOTEA the makeup artist. I took my childhood name and simply combined it with my real name to create an evolved identity. As I grew, I realized my battles with self-love would work to shape my entire brand. Every service & product has a reference to chocolate or sweets as a reminder of my journey to loving who I am. Now, I gain personal fulfillment in helping others attain that confidence and self-acceptance that God enabled me to find. My purpose is the empowerment of others through a signature makeup application that is Soft but Serves!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely was not smooth. I battled with severe depression, anxiety, and self-esteem issues for most of my life until I had a spiritual breakthrough in 2016 right before working for MAC Cosmetics.

For one full year (2015), I was unemployed after college and underwent a transition period where I immersed myself in devotionals, scripture, nature, and journaling.

After a lot of reflection, struggle, and growth, I peeled myself out of bed one day to accompany my mom and sister to the mall, walked into MAC, and got a job offer on the spot.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in a soft beauty aesthetic that enhances natural features with trendy accents. For example, sometimes I’ll add colorful eyeliner to a soft look, or crystals around the eyes, faux freckles, or specialty lashes for a pop of fun.

I am most proud of my ability to overcome obstacles and in turn, lift others up simply by following my intuition & doing what I’m naturally gifted at. Everything feels… purposeful. Like puzzle pieces are always being connected around me.

What sets me apart is I’m purpose-driven & pride myself on balancing professionalism with fun relatability. I laugh at everything & focus on making sure my clients have an experience they can only get with me. Not to mention, the brand knowledge I obtained from my career path is so vast, my services now include both makeup and mini spa facials to uniquely prep skin. In July 2020, I also launched a cosmetic line as an extension of my services that grew from nine products to 17 SKUs in the first year of business.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve had quite a few mentors – even clients that help me connect dots, push myself, and further my business.

Largely, my mom Tia and grandma Joyce whose support & constant prayers protect and guide me. I work at a salon owned by an entrepreneurial badass – Ms. LaTarsha who is an open book with any business questions I have. I bounce new ideas off of my younger sister and my closest friends ALL the time and use them as test subjects or models in all of my shoots. I have a client Chè – who is hands down the most incredible esthetician I know – she answers any skin care questions I have, advises me, and inspired this new branch of skin services I offer! I have the most amazing boyfriend -Ray, who doubles as my personal tech engineer, website maintenance, therapist, personal assistant, masseuse, whatever I need. He’s so supportive of my dreams and always reminds me to take time to recharge. I have a community of wedding planners and event planners that connect me with new faces – namely Sharon from A Vision from Shaye and Tifphany Nichol of Tifphany Nicole Weddings. My Clients are also so encouraging – everyone from local news personalities to therapists, teachers, essential workers, and community leaders give honest feedback that helps me grow. My administrative assistant Kini Reid was recently hired in March and has been a HUGE help organizing the 20+ weddings on calendar, all client inquiries, and general business on the back-end. We have so much in store for the next few years! This job is bigger than me and taking bits from every interaction is how I progress.
