Rising Stars: Meet Shanna’ Brailford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanna’ Brailford.

Hi Shanna’, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up with a cousin who did hair. I was always amazed at how she made it do what she wanted it to. As a child, I admired the way our hair could change colors and do different things. I knew what I wanted to do.

Fast forward to high school, I got the opportunity to go to a magnet school where I studied hair. I graduated with my license at 17 and went straight to work. My first real job was at a day spa. My first client was a highlight, color, and haircut. I turned it down. Why? Because I was scared.

My boss comes over to me and asks why I turned away money. Not a person but MONEY! I told her I was scared and not ready to do color. Guess what she said,” Yes, you are!” So she went and found that client and explained the situation, and the client was more than willing to let me do her hair, knowing she was my first real client. The client was very impressed and happy. I killed it! My boss loved it, and I was crying happy tears. Lol After that, I fell in love with my job. That client made me feel so good. From then on, I wanted to do the same for my soon-to-be clients.

I ended up working there for a very long time. I had a full book in 2 yrs. Fast forward a decade, and now I’m working at a very lovely salon where that’s all I do is mainly color! I do other things, but the color is my love. That’s what I’m known for. I also love extensions and how I can mix the 2. I don’t like to say I make people beautiful. I want to say I help bring out the best in people through their hair. And think. I tuned down my first client. I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today if my boss hadn’t made me take a client. I thank her every! I have to know been a stylist for over 20 yrs. My clients are more like my family. My clients are rockstars. They are the reason I love what I do.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
I can say that it has been a smooth ride thus far. I’m excited about the future.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a hairstylist and have been for over 20 yrs. I specialize in color and extensions—Tape-ins, Hand ties, and weaves. I am proud of my ability to learn new things quickly. What sets me apart is my personality. I’m one of a kind.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
I would say be patient! The book won’t come overnight. Stay on top of your education because this industry is constantly changing. I wish I would have taken more risks when it came toy career. Maybe I would be doing movie sets right now. But it’s okay. I will get there.
