Rising Stars: Meet Rysheem McGirt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rysheem McGirt.

Hi Rysheem, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started taking acting seriously when I got booked for my first ever community theater playback in 2019 called “SWEAT” at Spotlight Theater in Baltimore. This was a play written by American playwright Lynn Nottage. After doing that show, I was inspired to do more community theater work and booked my first paid gig at the Strand Theater in “Black Superhero Magic Mama.” I also stand up and have taken that seriously for about a year. I started going to other open mics, and then one day, I was working at Blue Point Crab House in Baltimore, and a couple of my family members decided to help me create my open mic night, which allowed us to make a name for ourselves and me as well. The team goes by Team Bigg Sheem. I have been getting booked for comedy shows and acting jobs a couple of months later.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say the road has been medium. I am the type of person that always ask questions and listen to those who have done it before me. Some of the struggles are finding the time to do everything I want to do.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
So I specialize in animal welfare. I am currently the Animal Facility Manager at Morgan State University, and I oversee the daily operation of their Animal Research Facility. Last year I decided to return to school, and I graduated in May 2022 from that AA program; I have enrolled back in school for my BA. I am proud that years later, I can still have the drive to obtain higher education and have a job in the field I love. Something that sets me apart from most people is my character. I am a very positive and motivational person.

Is something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I use to work with dolphins.
